Lost Abbey Serpent Stout is the best non barrel aged stout I've personally had.

I feel Barrel aging bring huge complexity to a stout. It gives it more dimensions, better mouth feel, more flavor etc. I don't think stouts have to be barrel aged to be amazing but it certainly helps. There are a lot more highly rated barrel aged stouts as opossed to regular stouts, and I feel like it's because of what the barrels do for the beer. I can't imagine drinking a non barrel aged bcbs, parabola, grey Monday, uncle Jacobs etc and thinking " this is much better than the barrel aged version". The barrel aging is what makes the beer what it is. Don't get me wrong, there are some epic non barrel aged stouts (Huna, Abraxas, even more Jesus) but then you compare those beers to dbh, ba Abraxas etc which are still considered way better. it just seems like barrels greatly enhance the flavors of stouts, and while you can get great non barrel aged stouts, barrel aged stouts are superior in general....just a lot more expensive. :stuck_out_tongue:

I'll keep buying Parabola as long as they keep making it. That being said right now I'm drinking a Lahgunitas Cappuccino Stout. Tasty as hell and $3.99 at Trader Joe's. Can't go wrong there.

Imperial stouts reign supreme in my beer kingdom. Even slightly above IIPA's.

Last Sunday I opened a bottle of Expedition, dated 10/2/12. Aged 2 and half years. Oh my god. Simply the best imperial stout I've ever had, and at this point I've tried most of the heavy hitters, BA or non-BA. No gimmicks, just everything great in a stout, and in spades.

I go back and forth between expedition and FIS. But this 30 month old Expedition blew me away.

I think there is a lot of over-hype with BBA beers. Yes, I agree that they may be awesome for you. I enjoy them, but I, too sometimes find that the bourbon is so overpowering that I do not even feel that I am drinking beer anymore. Not saying they are not good, just saying that I think they are slightly overhyped and slightly overrated....

Wish there were more red wine barrel aged stouts out there. I've really enjoyed the few I've had.

I am one for a well crafted regular stout. Every BBA Stout I have tried seemed like they were trying to hide a bad stout with the bourbon flavor including GI BCBS the booziness is overpowering and kills your palate I feel they same about most High ABV stouts.

BA isn't for every beer. I actually prefer Breakfast Stout over KBS.

Had a Prairie Limo Tint today, so refreshing to have a normal, low abv stout once in a while.

Absolutely! Probably my favorite non barrel aged stout. Dark horse plead the 5th is a good one as well.

Shoot, come to think of it, clown shoes unidragon is a good one too. Also, brooklyn black chocolate, stone ris, jackie o's dark apparation, and thirsty dog siberian night are all awesome.
