Jacks Abby has some great brewery only stuff, specifically the double and triple hopped Hoponius Union. Although, it was so successful at the Brewery, they are now bottling it and calling it Excess.
Also, they will have cocoa-nut BA Framinghammer and PB&J BA Framinghammer as Brewery only. LOVE JA!!

With the number of small breweries popping up all over the country, I think this is a very common occurrence.
I have had many local beers that would easily rise to the top of the beer world if they ever became available.
I kind of like the fact that they never will.

Why is that any harder to believe than a beer aged in Port or other French/Italian wine barrels? Wineries retire barrels, and breweries seek used barrels of pretty much any type.

Two of my favorite that continously have brewery only releases or special variants/brews available for onsite consumption are Black Raven and Fremont. Other than brewery bottle releases they also have cask, randalled and other variants offered onsite all the time.

    Posted on their website:
    Montepulciano Kolschâ„¢
Indigenous to Italy, and brought to us by the Orsi Family in Dry Creek, Montepulciano is a varietal that has a deep ruby color and produces a juice with a soft flavors reminiscent of plum jam. Blended with a light Kolsch ale and refermented in oak.

Although, Dry Creek is in Cali, the Montepulciano grape originates in Italy. My OP was not intended to question Bear Republics products but rather spark the conversation it has about Rare One-Off Batches at Pubs Only or to all the DONG's out there.

Since I compromise and am a member at the local winery here in IL for my Fiance's sake, it sure tasted like the hearty Montepulciano grape was in there.

A local brewery near my house only sells at the tap in-house or will fill a growler. Not sure if they will ever distribute but they have continually impressed me with their offerings. We probably have a dozen breweries within half an hour of the house and this is the only one that I really wanted to return to.

Founders does a bunch of pub only stuff that are usually great. Panther Cub comes to mind- Porter aged with vanilla beans in maple syrup bourbon barrels. Maybe some other stuff in there too, just can't remember. They also do some cask stuff of their flagships with added hop varieties, etc. It's always fun to go there and try some cool stuff.

That's what I thought. The Montepulciano grape is a cultivar of Sangiovese, which is what the wine must legally be labeled as in California - Montepulciano is of course a DOCG area of Chianti. So, calling either the barrels or the wine Montepulciano, which it's made from California Sangiovese, is pretty misleading, but I can understand that brewers wouldn't be as literate in winemaking details. So, these are Sangiovese barrels from Sonoma.

Last two years they released it. You want to get your hands on some again, hit me up when it's released this year and we can arrange a trade of some sort if you like. I haven't dipped my toes into that pool yet, but, having going to Cali the last two years (but not this year), there is stuff you can get your hands on that I can't.

In my area, this is an extremely common occurrence, particularly among the small batch guys.. Not sure if it is because they can't get the same combination of ingredients to re brew or... ???

Anyway, as someone mentioned above Wicked Weed has had a lot of beers not return. Hell, they're honey based beer they won a gold medal for at the GABF LAST YEAR has yet to return. >shrugs<

And, Wicked Weed isn't alone, I found myself in Greensboro at Natty Greene's production facility. They have a bar there called, "The Bunker", which is only open on Fridays or when special events happen at the Colosseum across the street. They, basically, serve nothing but one off's there, or at least that's how it was explained to me. And dern some of them were down right tasty.

It seems throughout many of the awesome responses thus far that depending on location this happens all of the time. The most would be NC or Northwest states which is anticipated but the problem is being in Illinois I dont think I could get any further from these points!

Lagunitas has done some nice Fusion Series beers here at the brewery solely for Chicago but I'll just have to keep on looking. Sometimes the best part of awesome beer chasing is knowing you had a special release that may very well stay local.
