The Grainshed Alliance membership includes many of our most lauded breweries like Allagash, Trillium, Bissel, as well as the supporting maltsters and farmers we know best, Hudson Valley Malt, Blue Ox, and Valley Malt. Beer is all about relationships, and promoting farm to glass can only help thicken the social fabric as well as help to define regionality, or dare I say, terroir.

The importance of craft malt is growing in the teenage years of this new craft beer wave. Affirming the connection between beer and agriculture is essential to the sustainability and further elevation of our beloved beverage. Heirloom and local grains already show up on menus of restaurants and bakeries, why can't they appear more often on cans, bottles, and taproom menus? Craft Malt and precision agriculture geared towards beer is a fledgling industry that has been quietly evolving symbiotically with craft beer.

Let's try and keep tabs on all the innovations, PR, and projects in this thread.
    • If you try a great beer that promotes local malt or showcases a relationship with a local farm, post it.
    • If there's a podcast, initiative, or article (academic or otherwise) share it.
    • If you travel to a malt house or farm, lets hear about it.
    • If you see a tap takeover with all craft malt, promote it.
    • If you had some dope bread or spent grain cookies, please share.

Cool initiative/coalition. Glad more brewers are focusing on using local grain and developing the infrastructure to support it. One of my favorite breweries (Wheatland Spring of Waterford, VA) focuses heavily on using estate/local/regional craft malt in their beers.

It is neat to see this slowly happening, I hope that it continues to as well. Seems more and more breweries are trying to source local malt when/if they can.

Not part of a coalition but in NJ one local to us in south jersey is Rabbit Hill Malthouse. They seem to be sourcing to more and more of our local breweries. Tonewood appears to have a pretty good relationship with them, they currently have at least two beers that were source from them. They also seem to brew with their stuff more now than a few years ago. Which may be due to more malt available (?) which is a good sign.

    The two beers currently:

Farm Bier - All Rabbit Hill Malthouse lager brewed with their farmhouse Pilsner and a touch of wheat. Fermented slow and low with our house lager strain. Bright notes of honeysuckle, lilac, soft cracker, and light hay.

Afterglow - Is a new smoked lager brewed with a portion of malt smoked over mulberry wood from our friends Rabbit Hill Malthouse. Fermented low and slow with our house lager yeast, “Afterglow” pours a golden hue with notes of sweet mesquite smoke, soft vanilla, dried berries, and geranium. It finishes crisp and dry.

    Both are great.

Next weekend (April, 2) is Square Foot Day!

Dirty Truth Beer Hall in Northampton MA is also supporting this effort, any other bars supporting this effort?

Thanks for posting. Great to know about the increasing localization of craft brewing in the area. Just saw this nice spot by Jack's Abby on Stone Path Malt in Wareham, MA:
