Any reconditions in the Newcastle or Durham areas?

Absolutely, this is one of the most under-rated regions of the UK for beer. Sadly I don't know it too well myself.

In Newcastle start off by checking out the Free Trade – not only are the pub and beer quality excellent, there is also one of the best views of the city anywhere.

Look out for breweries like Rigg & Furrow, Two By Two, Wylam.

It's usually worth having a look at the local CAMRA magazine for the latest news on pubs and breweries: https://tynland.camra.org.uk/canny-bevvy-issue-259-spring-2024/

It's been a while since I visited Tyne & Wear, so I won't try to recall my pub favourites there. In Durham City I visited a couple decent (but not exceptional) pubs, not far from the cathedral (which is a must visit). I'd recommend visiting Darlington, where must pub visits are The Quakerhouse, The Number Twenty-2 and The Old Yard Tapas Bar. If the Cheese & Wine Shop is still alive, they have some decent local ales for takeaway. The Head of Steam Darlington Railway Museum (worth a visit in its own right) sell a couple beers that are specially brewed for them.
