I stumbled upon this at home growler system that holds 5 liter Mini kegs and gives you a mini keg you can fill up as a growler for it. Wanted to know if any one has heard of it or used one before. I haven't been able to find much out about it or many reviews on it. Think it is worth giving it a shot. It is on sale at Walmart for $150. https://www.walmart.com/ip/Nostalgi...5035&wl11=online&wl12=553008084&wl13=&veh=sem
You should check with your brewery and bar to see if they will fill a 5L growler. A standard growler is one half US gallon or 64 ounces. 5L is US 1.32 gallons. So you see, the conversion is less than convenient. Nobody works in Liters. Nobody. Commercial mini kegs are not a value and mostly imported though some domestics are showing up. These are pasteurized kegs and not the same as draft beer. The imports typically have a cooked flavor. These mini keg systems tend to get very poor reviews around here. I have never used this specific model but cant tell you, at that price point, you are getting some serious corners cut. Expect plastic parts. A plastic faucet is not acceptable. I expect nothing is standardized. The cooler is thermoelectric, and that is not robust. No matter what they say, that is not going to maintain 38F liquid. Expect a novelty for a month or two before you tire and put it in the basement. Cheers.
I can't comment on the home-brew aspects but as Billandsuz said its probably a cool novelty more than anything. Synek makes something similar that seems to have more utility but is much more expensive: https://synek.beer They can use standard growlers (with adapter) as well as selling 128 oz cartridges that some breweries will fill up (their website shows who supports them). Looks like there was a discussion about 5L kegs in general: https://www.beeradvocate.com/community/threads/5l-mini-kegs-who-loves-them.93211/ If you really want draft beer go for a kegerator. In most cases just buying cans is a better option than anything else.
Yeah those were the exact concerns I was having. Don't think many places would do a fill that big. Thanks cheers.
I got an email about this system yesterday: https://ny.hopsy.beer Another interesting option but still the two issues are: 1. high cost per ounce and 2. limited options for beer. At least with 2 liters of beer even if the refrigeration unit isn't fantastic you probably have drank all of the beer before it warms. If the beer is really fresh then it could be a fun toy, the brands that are supported aren't bad, a few even really good.
