Got back from a week in Vegas and visited some old favs (Big Dog, Ellis Island, Able Baker) and one new (to me): HUDL. I thought Hudl was solid on the two flights I sampled and the Two Blocks Down collaboration with Able Baker is delicious. And I noticed last year when we were our that Ellis's brews are much better than in the past. Wanted to try their BA Rauchbier (a GABF medal winner) but they were out. Their regular Rauchbier was ok but I got no smoke from it and was pretty thin on the mouth feel; I stu k with their Oatmeal Stout when I wasn't imbibing on the Holiday Nog. Next trip out will try at least one new one (to me) but I'd say that Vegas is moving up on the beer scene. My least fave (in many trips) has been Hop Nuts. Still enough to try so... Good job, Vegas.
Been this way for a bit for me when i visit at least Fremont area has decent shit. No need to visit that Whole Foods or excessively packing my own beer yo last me the trip out anymore. Tenaya Creek, ,Trustworthy, HuDL . Fuck yea. Cheers brother
Me and my fiancé really liked Ellis Island when we were there about a month back. It was packed for Sunday football, but we snagged a seat at the bar and had some solid offerings.
Maybe the trick is to just go to breweries while in Vegas. The wife and I were there a couple weeks ago and visited the 365 and the Eureka pub/Cafe over in the Fremont area. Both places had a great tap selection, but a lot of the stuff I ordered didn't taste very fresh. A glass of 2018 kbs at the 365 was pretty much undrinkable, and German pils I ordered had some sort of off flavor as well. The glass of two hearted I had at the Eureka was the worst glass of two hearted I've ever tasted (though to be fair, most of the local stuff I ordered at the Eureka was fine). I'd probably skip the 365 the next time I'm in Vegas (it's just off the strip, so prices there were pretty high as well), though I did like the Eureka.
Yep. Can’t remember the name of the beer bar we were at (it was inside a casino) but all the cans I asked for were extremely old. I think the general idea is to always drink local.
The mash paddle at Ellis Island is now manned by Eddie Leal, formerly from (among other places) Steelhead Brewing in Irvine (RIP) The beers at Ellis have been cleaned up and everything I've had on my past two visits have been pretty much spot on...and something like $3 pint as well.
Thanks for this John, was planning to hit Pub 365 when there in a couple months for Metallica. Think we'll pack some Fremont and Bruery stuff for our concert pre-game instead, or just stick to good rye.
I used to go to Ellis every other month or so when I lived in LV for 16 years. Haven't been back there though for about the last 5 or 6 years since I moved away. Good to know they are improving as far as their beer goes. Will give them a try next time I'm over that way. Whatever the case, it's still worth heading over there for the steak special.
