This is known as sensory attention deficit disorder (SADD). They make pills to fix that. Talk to your doctor about your issues.

One that immediately comes to mind is Spiral Jetty, but little different scenario. I was at a tasting several years ago and they offered Jetty. When I sampled it, I was really impressed. Based on the great taste, I bought one. Got home, opened it up, and I seriously suspected that it was not the same beer - it was that different and disappointing.

As for the law of diminishing returns as it applies to everything else, I have suffered this occasionally when I first have something on draught, then out of the bottle on follow up tries. Used to happen more often with IPA's when bottle v. bottle was the instance until dating became more widespread.

I've had two glasses of Enjoy By, both on tap, both well within the Enjoy By date. The first time I had an Enjoy By, maybe a year ago, I savored every sip. The second time, maybe a month ago, I found it overpowering and forced down the second half of the glass. I attribute this entirely to my changing tastes, as DIPAs in general don't appeal to me as much as they used to.

i agree, but on the other hand there have been lots of beer that i really did not like the first time, then gave it a second chance and loved it. I.E. Enjoy by, Ten Fidy

Brown Shugga. First time was magical, second time it seemed messy. Third one was magical again. I've had a few more and I just never know which way it's going to be. I'm sure the beer is the same, it's my tastebuds causing the variation. Fun!

There's been quite a few but as of last night I'd have to add Dirtwolf to the list. Thought it was amazing when Victory started making its way to AZ, but I tried it again and thought it was way too much of a grapefruit bomb. But it might be unfair to say because lately I've been disliking pretty much all IPAs, but it was still surprising

Permanent Funeral. The first batch they released in bottles was amazeballs. The 2nd batch, I was a little let down.

Zombie Dust. Not that it's not great, but it hasn't lit me up like it did the first time. I'll take Pseudo Sue or Trillium over it any day of the week.

This happens pretty often for me with beers that wow me, and rarely do I get one that blows me away and is still as impressive X number of times after my first try.

The most recent was West Ashley. Blew me away the first time I had it. Had it again on Monday and while it was still an awesome beer, I didn't get that wow factor again.

PseudoSue is one that keeps impressing me every time I have it.

For me, most beers lose their luster after the first beer. They lose the novelty. It's like having sex with a girl you had been lusting over for a long time. Either you're disappointed, or it just isn't the same the second time.

I think i'd have to say none of the subsequent releases have been as good as the first time I tried a batch of Enjoy By from Stone. Now I hear the recipe never changes, blah blah, but w/e. The first time I had that first bottle, it was like that scene from Beerfest when they try their families historic long lost brew recipe. It has just not had the same pizzazz since then.

Noda monstro. I remember first having it at black and blue and it blew me away. I tried it again once they bottled it and was disappointed.

Spot on! I almost try to convince myself it is as good as I remember. The more I have of beers that I once thought we're incredible, the more convincing is needed.

Boulevard Chocolate Ale. I still think its a good beer, but not the "Wow" that I said the first time.

same here with the Ten Fidy. it was the most drastic turn i've ever had on a beer - positive or negative

Brown Shugga is that rare hoppy beer that actually can improve (depending on your preference) with some age. When fresh, it's like a super malty DIPA. After a couple months it really takes on more of a barleywine character. I have also had varying degrees of enjoyment with the same six-pack, which I attribute to both the age of the beer, as well as my current mood or expectations at the time I am drinking it.
