With the boom in craft beer, the top 250 is populated with a bunch of big-hyped beers, that are over-rated by tasters who finally get to taste them. i like to consult the Beers of Fame list just as much. If you want to know what's recent and hot, check the Top Beers. NN is still great in my opinion, and now in cans!

We should just have the Bros. rename the top 250 list as the "Hipster's Best Beer List" and the Beers of Fame "The Real Beer Advocate's Top 250" list.

Wow, the first time I had NN, it was in the top 50.

I'm glad this thread is shining a light on beers of fame.

I've gotten to wrapped up in the 250. Some have been very disappointing. Recently I noticed that's not the case with every beer I've tried on the fame list

Nugget Nectar: An Imperial Amber with a shit ton of hops. Sounds like it was the over hyped beer of its day. Just like Hopslam. Just like Dark Lord.

For me the 250 list is mostly a "current popularity" list and one that is deliberately structured to allow new beer/breweries to gain some wide-spread attention when they do something enough people like. Once the beer gets noticed by a broader audience it then will either stand or fall on the increased number of ratings/reviews. So, in a way, it’s a lot like actors/actresses. Some come and go. Some stand test of time and you can always rely on their performance, and even when they are not at their best they still are better than much of the competition.

Again, this is why I believe that a beer should not be eligible for the top 250 unless is has at least 2,000 ratings.

    Just my two cents.

There aren't many beers that are both good enough and available enough for me to bother getting a whole case of it. NN is one of them.

I have to say I once considered this to be one of my favorite beers, but not anymore. I guess my palate has changed because it's not the delicious hop bomb I remember it to be.

Honestly, I'm not sure it's in the top 250 beers I've personally tried, much less the whole set of beers in the world.

Picking up a 4x16oz for $9.99 was pretty nice though.

i don't understand how beers get on the 250 list with just 100 ratings.

Not trying to stir anything, but I think beers should have a certain amount of reviews before it can crack the top 250. Some beers have so few reviews and compete with some of the other legends that have been around for years. The other question is would Nectar have been in the top 100 for so long if it wasn't seasonal? Probably not. Great beer no matter what!

It's now no longer a hard number:

m = minimum ratings required to be considered (currently 56)
= (the average number of ratings across the dataset)

The minimum number has changed a number of times over the years, before now being an average number of ratings for every beer in the datasheet.

It's because it got much wider distribution this year and generally beers that are widely available don't garner as high of scores because people think of it as being common.

750 reviews before you can be in the top 250. You will still have an excellent grade, but not the glory of the top 250. It really shouldn't matter anyway.

Still a great beer...think long and hard about that and how you would compare others in the top whatever number...so many reasons besides overall quality...

IMO, NN has changed over the years as its hop-profile seems to have shifted away from fruity and towards piney. It's dazzling fruitiness is what turned heads, now it's just lack-luster dryness with a solid malt base. I think it deserves its fall.
