Chicken and egg situation. The reason it is desired is due to how the locals have rated it.

I clicked through about 50 and counted 6 Iowans. Hard to tell if that rate would keep up for all 395, but if you consider its trade value it seems likely that more of it leaves the state than stays in it.

That’s actually one of the ideas behind the dynamics of the 250 beers list. Gets a beer noticed so it gets more widely spread around and tasted so if the ratings hold up then an argument can be made it’s a quality beer an not just something only locals like. Helps promote the growth of top quality breweries....

That's interesting. Seems like a person who hears about a super hyped up beer and trades $300 of crap for it will be more apt to rate it higher. I put a homebrew IPA into a Kern Citra bottle and all but one personat the tasting checked into Untapp'd and gave it a 4.5. I waited 10 minutes, and then told them it was homebrew. They all deleted their check ins, re-evaluated, and gave it a 4 or lower. I think if some of these super hyped beers were blind tasted by some more available, same style beers, they wouldn't be as highly regarded.

Sure those kinds of effects can still be present, but the more people who do the ratings the closer the numbers will move to an accurate representation of relative standing. Not a lot of folks in the trading forum who are likely to swop $300 worth of anything for a bottle of beer....

Also with your test, remember that while there might well have been an effect of the label, there would also be a "blowback" effect from your having "lied" to them.

So you're right. At the end of the day blind tasting is what it takes. Properly done blind tasting (which most blind tasting isn't BTW). But we'll not be seeing that on a consumer oriented free web site.

It used to be ranked much higher than 63 even.

I wish I could like this 10x. I started a thread on this very topic and also mentioned how many people must be claiming they had beers that they couldn't possibly have tasted (PtY in September, sure you did), but it was locked and deleted.

I love NN. It stands the test of time for my palate. The thing about NN is the depth and the balance. It is not sharp or in your face. Many hear the hype and expect unicorn farts, but they get balance and depth and a full body and are left with the disappointment of unfulfilled expectations.

It was little more than a year ago that I went through my Belgian phase and was resistant to the hop forward stuff. I got some sucks and NN and wondered myself about the NN hype. Sucks was so forward with the stone fruit and the nose I could smell for miles. NN seemed blunted. But over time I could see the balance and the richness and fullness of the body in NN. And after my palate was wrecked and ruinated and chilled and freshly squeezed, NN stands strong. Fuck the top 250. Long live Nugget Nectar!

Well, given the number of seasonal beers that never even make it onto the 250 list at all I think we can probably say it would have struck around quite a while and that seasonality isn't as critical a factor in ratings as some like to suggest. Probably more important than seasonality as such is the fact that whether folks pay attention to bottle/case dating or not, they'd still be more likely to be drinking it fairly fresh than with a year round offering. (Which for most beers is what should be happening.)
