No I wasn't. Like warriorsoul said hoppy can refer to bitterness (which is how I was using it) or sometimes flavor and aroma. Sure bitterness is a perceived flavor but I was conveying there is little hop flavor or aroma in this beer. If you were confused, now you know what I meant.

Now I get it. It's a bitter malt bomb. But, it's not hoppy. Should have just said so.

Call it what you want. I stand by how I describe it. Many brewers and homebrewers (myself included) would agree with me.

The keg I got is pretty good. Not the best NN I have ever had, but it is nothing like the bottles I had from 1/8. Definitely enjoyable and more like the NN I love.

Piper's pub in Pittsburgh had both cask and draft versions yesterday. In the past I've preferred the cask version, but whether it's a batch variation or whatever, this year I find that I'm much preferring the draft version. The hops just don't seem to really shine through in the cask version the way they seem to in the better draft versions I've had this year.

My keg tastes fine. Better than the bottles I got a month or so ago. People here expect diamonds, get gold, and treat it like dirt.

I was one of the first to agree that the 1/8 batch was not stellar. Well, that case is long gone. It was an average ale, read my original comment. My buddy just brought over a six pack from the same bottling date, 1/8 and its drinking terribly. Oxidized, taste stale, visually degraded as well. NN was my favorite beer, I no longer can say that, been burned two years in a row.

well looks like a new batch just hit the streets, fresh and all over the place. I am on the fence about grabbing another case just because I am rolling with the seasonal stouts and dopplebocks.

All I can say is my keg was kicked in record time. 3 weeks, maybe even a little less. It was delicious and I did almost cry when it was gone. My final thoughts on this. I'll be the first to admit I thought last years draft version (didn't have bottles) was below par. It was just "off" to me. But I'll be the first to admit that I thought this years batch was back on track being the delicious juicy, hoppy beer that we have come to expect from NN. I had both bottles and draft this year and came away with the opinion that last year was a one time thing caused by the move.

FYI, if I do find any more bottles, I am planning on picking up some more so I can enjoy it for a few more weeks. Cheers to Troegs, still an excellent brewer.

I am happy to report that I had Nugget Nectar on tap last night, and it was much better than my experience in February. Pretty much what I remembered. I'm not sure what the date was for the keg, but as long as it tastes like that, I don't care!

Just had some bottled 1/22/13. The last time I had Nugget Nectar was close to three years ago, and while that was a long time ago, I drank over a case of it at the time, and I remember how balanced and drinkable, yet hoppy it was. I rarely buy hoppy beers in bottles anymore, but since I'm in NJ for a few days, I thought I would revisit this beer. The bottle I just drank was plain disappointing. Very malty, and fairly oxidized, which enhances the malt character and takes away from fresh hop character. The hop aroma was completely muted, and there wasn't much juicy hop character in the flavor, just bitterness really. To top it off there was a bit of mercaptan in the nose and also a slight saltiness to the flavor-- two things that suggest yeast autolysis.

Very few craft breweries truly nail QC. This particular batch of NN obviously has some serious issues on the fermentation and packaging (oxidation) end of things.
