I'm heading to Nuremberg in December for the Christmas market. What are the best "local" beers in Nuremberg to try? I'm not interested in the mass produced beers that are imported back into the US, I'm looking for something I won't see again unless I return. Will be doing a day in Bamberg as well as a day in Munich. I'm sure there's plenty in Bamberg. Munich seems to be flooded with the larger breweries. Any "can't miss" beers?
My suggestion would be to find a well stocked "Getraenkemarkt" like Fristo or Fraenky and check out some fresh bottled selections. I've heard good things about the local-ish Kitzmann, Hertl and I'm thinking fresh Altstadthof is a solid choice. As far as other bottled beers you probably won't find readily in the US, I like Gutmann, Rothaus, Kapuziner and Julius Echter (Wuerzberger Hofbraeu). In that area you will mostly find helles and hefeweizen, not a lot of pilsner being consumed in that area.
Kitzmann closed a few years ago, the brand is now brewed by a bigger concern. Definitely agree with checking out a beer depot where you will see brands you've never heard of before. But don't spend your trip drinking bottles in your hotel room, that would be a shame. Altstadthof is central, try to take the underground cellar tour too. I prefer the beer at Schanzenbräu whose taproom is worth a visit. Last time I was in Nuremberg I crossed the main road from the rail station and dropped into Bratwurstglöcklein. Yes it's a bit touristy but the sausages are good and the beer (from Dorn-Bräu Bruckberg, quite a bit further south) is good too. Don't dismiss the “larger breweries” that are imported to the US. There's a big difference between a six month old bottle of Hofbräu from your bottle shop in Georgia, and drinking a liter of fresh Dunkel from tap in the actual Hofbräuhaus.
This -- in spades. Plus, you can't pass up a visit to the Hofbräuhaus or any Augustiner venue to soak up the atmosphere.
Totally agree with this. They had their bock available when I was there a month ago, and it was delicious. That's the location at center city, right? There is a taproom at the brewery location, but if I understood correctly, it is for use during brewery tours, so don't go there.
This is the one I mean: https://www.google.com/maps/place/Schanzenbräu+Schankwirtschaft/@49.4475681,11.0478884,15z/ I wouldn't call it centre city but it's close enough, a couple of stops on the subway.
@WhatANicePub That link isn't working right for me. This is probably the location that you're referencing? https://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/21239/ Here's a pic of the brewery location and it's taproom:
Thanks everyone! I’m not dismissing the big ones but I travel to Germany a bit and have hit them several times. Looking for a little variety. I think Altstadthof is already on the list if they sit above the underground caves. I guess all caves are underground.
I've enjoyed some good meals at Hütt'n, right near Altstadthof.. . If Rittmayer Smoky George is available, give it a try. A smoky, whisky barrel bier. Prost!!
I was just in Nürnberg 4 weeks ago. Near the train station there is Balkon, I enjoyed the beers from Reh. Schantzenbräu had good beer and food. Palais Schaumberg was not a brewery, but I enjoyed the food and beers there. The Rotbier I had 2 years ago at Altstadthof was too sweet. I haven't been back. This should help Nürnberg - Beerwanderers https://share.google/nrf9Y9RVr2tmGcr9D
I find most Rotbier are too sweet, especially the Tucher one and also including Altstadthof. Schanzenbräu's is a bit hoppier.
I am out of the country until Thanksgiving. But as you get closer let me know I might have sometime in Munich or Nürnberg to meet up.
