Off there with wife and wee one mid September and looking for recommendations.

Staying in Gasthaus Pillhoffer which looks fun beer and food wise and looking for some insider knowledge of good places for beer. My time will be limited however I’m sure I’ll be able to escape for a few hours over the four days before we head to stay in the Erdinger Hotel in Erding for the final two nights!

Any brewery tours that people know about?

Although I've never been there myself, orca brau is located in Nuremberg (although a bit outside of the city center). They consider themselves as a "creative brewery" and make lots of interesting beers. Everything I have had from them has been exceptional and if I was in Nuremberg I would visit them. Their website is here ( http://www.orcabrau.de/ ) and according to the website, they are open for public sales and tastings on Thursdays from 17:00-19:00 and on Fridays from 14:00 - 18:00 .

Nürnberg is a small town and it's not difficult to walk across it and back. You're in the south so let me suggest a walking tour. I hope you like churches! Head north on the Königstraße past Sankt Clara on your left and not you'll soon find Barfüßer on your left. It's an interesting brauerei in the basement. Continue north on Königstraße past Sankt Lorenz on your right and cross the Pegnitz via the Museumsbrücke (photo op) and you'll fine the Frauenkirche and Christkindlesmarkt (which is used for different things year-round). Head up the left side and you'll find Sankt Sebaldus Kirche. Hang a left and you'll hit Albrecht-Dürer-Platz. Just a few steps up the hill is the Hausbrauerei Altstadthof, and right across the street, Hutt'n which offers a good beer selection and some very nice schnitzel if you're hungry. Keep going to the top of the street and you'll find Cafe Wanderer (best selection of unusual beers in the city with a great owner who'll help you out) kitty-corner to the Albrecht Dürer haus. From there I'd suggest you return home by heading down the western side of the city (you'll find your way) so that you can see most of it, and you can stop for a final beer at Weissbier Hex (just an interesting place to see, not a great selection).

Your knowledge is noted and hugely appreciated!!!! I’m salivating.

Do you have any knowledge of my Hotel? Is it decent enough for putting my family heads down and for beer/food?

Gasthaus Pillhoffer is nice, certainly compared to some places in Nurnberg, and overall Germany - very few American-style super clean and nice places there. You'll enjoy it. Bonus: it's right next to the castle! If you want to grab some beers for the room there are also a few places right on Königstraße, right there, but for a better selection if you go south and east past the railway there's a better bottle shop but I forget the name... Landbier Paradise or something like that. I think there's another location as well. Enjoy your trip!

We stopped at Hausbrauerei Altstadthof for lunch one day. I had to have the Nürnberg sausages and try the Rotbier. It was worth a stop and there weren't that many other options at the time.

It's probably not why you're in Germany, but if you want a legitimate American-style IPA, NBG is one of the only places doing just that: http://www.newbeergeneration.de/

as mentioned above i second wanderer, great little place with a rotating guest tap. hutt'n is nice place too, as is nurnberger alm just round the corner. altstadthof is ok but they serve small measures for higher prices. If you can make it to the southern edge of the centre go to landbier paradies, they have rotating taps of beers from some of the smaller franconian breweries. also schanzenbrau, nice little brewery tap and they do a good rotbier

I met my wife in Gasthaus Heilig Geist Spital, a very nice place for dinner. Otherwise, Bratwurst Glöcklein is also very traditional. Have fun!

Update - Visited a fair few of the recommendations and thoroughly enjoyed the place.

Forchheim was good too but for me not the class of Erlangen as a festival.

Did you venture to any pubs in Forcheim town, or just the Kellerwald? Reason I ask is that we are off to Bamberg in September and thinking of having a day / half day in Forcheim but info on the pubs is … patchy.

I went to the Kellerwald last Sept, mid month. A fair amount of the Keller’s were open (it was nice out). Really enjoyed the time there, as your and have 0.5 liters when it is not Annafest. Wandering around you can sample many beers.

Edit - the Mrs and I liked Hebendanz over Neder. They are almost side by side, so you can try both.

We didn’t really bar a couple near our hotel which names escape me however their prices didn’t....€2.50 a beer! Nice wee town but I’m personally not convinced it’s really worth a visit?

When we went we walked. Gawd I was ready for a beer by the time I got to the top of the hill! I think we took the steeper route.

Waked from the train station. The first time we did the steeper route, second time we went more to the north.

Start at 24 in this map, not 1.
