We have booked a pilgrimage to Rome for November of this year and while there I'd very much like to find a spot to try some of Italy's monastic brewers such as Nursia and Tre Fontane. Does anyone in the area, or who has made the journey, have any tips on places I could try these two? I have plenty of good recommendations for beer spots, but I'm not really an IPA (Italian Pale Ale?)/barrel aged kind of guy.

Any other suggestions for old school brewers represented in the area would be greatly appreciated.

I'm not sure how helpful this is, but I paid €6 for a Tre Fontane at Beerland Trilussa in the Trastevere neighborhood. I saw it elsewhere for €3, so you're paying a bit much, but they also had a bunch of other Trappist beers (Westvleteren, etc.). I remember seeing the Nursia label, but I'm not sure if it was there or somewhere else. (Nursia, BTW, ships to the USA just in case you don't find it).

However, I doubt I saw that Nursia at Domus Birrae (which seems to be one of Roma's most talked about, and rightly so, beer shops) as it's just not their thing - they like more hoppy and funky, youthful beers (IPAs, barrel-aged, sours). It may have been at Birra +, which I think is worth a visit anyway, although I can't remember.

I'd also suggest that as you wander the streets stop in at every little place you see just to take a look. Most shops will be almost exactly the same, but I was occassionally
amazed at what I found in what seemed to be run-of-the-mill shops.

Thanks for the info, Nero. I'll keep those spots in mind. Chances are most of my beer will be had at restaurants, leading me to believe they'll be mostly mass market. I don't mind the newer beer experiments, but frankly I can get that here in any number of hip bars cleverly decorated with reclaimed materials without having to travel a third of the way around the world. Perhaps the best thing would be to simply make a run out to the monastery.
