Wish I could put this in one of the regional forums, but my question spans Mid-Atlantic and New England.
I am planning ahead for my R&R back to Seattle and will be flying in from Dubai to NY, DC or Boston areas. I'm not sure which airports yet but that may be determined by the input I get from my fellow BAs. I'm thinking that since they are all roughly the same price, I may as well pick the one with the best beer things to do that are close to the airport.

Which one would you pick if you had to have a layover and why?

    Thank you for you input!

Since it's international, I assume a NYC layover would be JFK. Nothing around there really as the airport is quite a ways outside of the city.

I think Boston might be your best bet.

By the same token DC probably means Dulles and you have the same issue. If you're flying into Reagan then DC Brau should be easily accessible via the Metro.

Heck, Boston puts you literally about a mile from Harpoon Brewery.

DC Brau is only open on Saturdays for limited hours and doesn't have a brew pub. You can get small tastes of their beers for free but no pints. It is also on the out skirts of DC and is not easy to get to. If you were doing this in June once Blue Jacket Brewery opens then I would suggest DC.

I guess if I flew into Boston Logan I'd want to go to Lord Hobo in Cambridge. CBC and Meadhall are also within walking distance of Lord Hobo. But I wouldn't describe these as "close" to the airport. Google maps says 5.4 miles, 12 minutes, but factor in Boston traffic and general airport rigamarole and it would have to be a really really loong layover to make it work. I'd rather have the shortest layover possible and enjoy a beer at the Sam Adams Brewhouse in Terminal A if time allowed, or whatever decent beer place I could find at whatever airport I landed in. Then drink good beer in Seattle after you've had time to recover from your trip.

Edit: Actually, I think maybe that's not there anymore, but there seems to be a "Boston Beer Works" at terminal C post security http://www.massport.com/logan-airport/inside-airport/Terminals/TerminalC.aspx

Brooklyn is fairly accessible from both NYC airports at least by taxi, and is the place to be for beer in NYC. Brooklyn Brewery is a cool place to visit, but if it's beer drinking you want, find your way to Spuyten Duyvil

DCs best beer bars are metro-accessible if you fly into Reagan. I would recommend Meridian Pint, it is a simple ride on the yellow line up to Columbia Heights, and then only a few blocks from the station. If you want to check out a brewery, hop either metro down to King St. and then find a way to get to Port City in Alexandria - not the easiest place in the world to get to by public transit, but King St. is only a few stops down from Reagan, and the brewery is only a few miles from the metro stop.

I'd say DC is a better bet if you can get a layover at Reagan, but if it is Dulles or BWI, forget it, they are in the middle of nowhere.

When is your R&R and how long of a layover are we talking here? If its just a few hours, not too sure there are many good options in the NYC area since youll have to be back for the flight 2 or so hours beforehand but if its for a day or longer then you can work with any of the airports I am sure.

The Boston Beer Works is alive and well in terminal C and it's not bad. There's also a Cisco and a Harpoon tap room within Logan, so if you're staying the airport it's a good choice (although Logan is not the easier place to get between terminals). Logan is in East Boston, but I don't know where there is good beer there. South Boston is a 10 minute cab ride with Local 149 there, although with a bunch of other bars that have some decent offerings. Otherwise, if you have time to get into Cambridge there's lots of options, but traffic and hassle come more into play.

I think there is (or was) a Harpoon outpost in Terminal A. I think there is a Cisco place as well, but not sure where. Really good call that in Boston, map distance/times are pretty much irrelevant!

From Logan Airport in Boston you can take the Silver Line right over to the Fort Point/Seaport area. Harpoon and Trillium are within 6 or 7 blocks of each other there. Trillium is fairly new but I've been hearing good things and Harpoon just opened a new beer hall a couple of months ago.

If you're staying for 24 hours - NYC

If you're talking about drinking in an airport then go with Boston.

I haven't spent enough time in Boston to comment on that city, but between DC and NYC, I would take NYC. Whether you fly in to EWR, La Guardia or JFK, you are no more than an hour to Manhattan or Brooklyn(depending on the airport).

If you're planning on leaving the airport during your layover go with Boston. Downtown Boston is 5 minutes from the airport.

The Cisco place is in the AA Terminal beyond security (I want to say Terminal B).

I can't speak of Boston or NYC, but I used to live near Dulles and there are a few good spots within 15 minutes of the airport.
DFH alehouse is only a few miles away and right behind it is a Total Wine if you want to stock up on beer to bring back with you.
There are also a few smaller brewpubs around too.
