I may be going with the wife and kid to the theater. We got free tickets but only 2 so I'll be sitting out. Any bars in that area that are a must hit for me while I wait for the family?

Edit, specifically we will be at the Theater at Madison Square Garden.

many of the same recommendations as some recent NYC threads - District Tap Hhouse is in/very near the theater district on 38th and 7th / 8th, As Is and the recently re-named Pony Bar (Hellcat Annies?) - both of which are bit more west, but still very close to theater district on 10th and 50th and 10th / 45th. Then you have Haymaker further down on 29th just east of 8th ave...

If you are going to be around MSG, Haymaker is the best option. It's real close. As Is, a bit north but also very good.

What about you drop them off and head over to Brooklyn to hit Other half and/or Interboro?

    Haymaker is your best option.

Great advice, great taplist and great ambiance. Go for 8 oz pours when you can, though, or you may end up like me last week telling everyone you were at Mayhaker...

Haven't been to Haymaker yet, but Rattle N Hum West is currently my favorite pre-MSG destination. Great tap list, good food, and always easy to get a table, even with a group.

I'm in a similar boat and figured this was the thread to ask. Of the places mentioned above that will have a decent beer offering, do any have good TV's or more known for showing sports?

I'm meeting a buddy from out of the country to watch the NCAA Sweet 16 Friday night and possibly go into the Garden for the 2nd game. But would love a place to watch the first games that has something better than Stella and Goose Island. Thanks!

Stout probably will have the best atmosphere for watching the games and their beer selection isn't great but its not terrible. Rattle n Hum will have the games on and great beer.

I will echo what everyone else has said and go to Haymaker considering distance and tap list. Rattle n Hum West is also good but a little bit of a walk. One other place worth considering that is only two avenues east is The Ginger Man. It has a larger list than Haymaker and, in my opinion, they have a better tap list than Rattle n Hum West.

Beermenus is definitely worth checking on your way up. I just checked and all three have been updated in the past 24 hours.

For TVs, Rattle n Hum West has the most and the largest of the three places.
