i'll be in NYC this Friday and I'm free until about 5pm, when I have a tattoo appointment in Brooklyn and then at 8pm when I'm going to a show at the Apollo. What should I check out for breweries/bars/etc? I'll be driving (I know it's dumb). Any and all help is welcome.

Check out Other Half (its in Brooklyn) before you go to the Appointment!

Grab some growlers from Other Half. They use a counter pressure system that will keep them fresh for weeks. I would avoid drinking and tattooing and also driving.

Other Half opens at 5 pm on Friday.

Proletariat opens at 2 pm on Friday. I think all the Barcade locations open around 12 pm. Most bottle shops should be open around 1 or so.

NYC is big - where in Brooklyn is your tattoo appt?

not beer-oriented but Clover Club, Dead Rabbit are great bars for afternoons. Torst opens at noon too.

    Is Torst worth it?

Also, what's the deal with to-go/growlers at bars? I haven't really been to New York as an adult.

Depends on the bar. Some places offer growlers to go, most don't. Some bottle shops will offer growlers.

most places, special those mentioned in this thread, will do to-go growlers, 32 or 64 oz. some won't do swing top because of tap height, but most are fine.

    Short answer is yes

Explanation - huge rare bottle list, great deal on fresh IPA 16oz cans ($5), and the draft menu is impeccable.

Parking is a bitch (pay) right next to Torst but up around the corner on Manhattan Ave you can find free parking.

Smith Street is great. Don't you not want to thin your blood at all before a session, though? A couple of high ABV beers at Torst or Other Half might not be great for getting a tattoo...

    May I suggest an alternative?

Instead of drinking your afternoon away, take advantage of the amazing local bottle shops, there are tons of great bottles to be had and for the price of sitting at Torst you can bring home quite the haul that will give you a waaaay better bang for your buck.

I suggest St Gambrinus, Covenhoven, City Swiggers, Milk and Hops etc etc and btw they all have beers on draft so you can drink while you shop!

I usually need a beer to calm myself beforehand. I'm not aiming to be wasted by 3pm, I just want a nice meal and a beer I can't get in Boston. I can't bring too much back or the girlfriend will kill me - our beer shelving is overflowing as is. Plus I think if I have fewer places in mind I have to worry about parking and transit times less.
