Hi everyone, I hate doing this but all my friends think I know everything about Manhattan seeing I live in NY. I've been there twice since I moved to this state. I have a few friends coming from Vt on Tuesday to stay in the city and they heard it's NYC beer week. I have no idea where to go for some brews, they are staying at hotel Marrakech on the upper west side. they are looking for a good bottle shop and someplace to have a few pints. We aren't against public transit, I tried the NYC beer week site and the events don't seem to match up with the actual websites. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Cheers, Tikk
Upper West isn't the best spot for beer unfortunately. For NYC Beer week I would take the trip tomorrow to either Torst in Greenpoint, Brooklyn or Blind Tiger in the West Village. Both are 2 of the best beer bars in NYC and they will be hosting Cigar City events tomorrow night with some great beers. The Jeffrey in Midtown East will be having a Maine Beer Co. event Wed. and a Bruery event Thurs. If you want to stay on the Upper West, Dive Bar is a good option. They usually have a solid draft and bottle list. Beer menus is showing they have BC Barleywine on at the moment. As for bottle shops, the best ones are downtown. The L.E.S. has Top Hops, New Beer Distributors, Whole Foods Bowery Beer Room & Malt&Mold. Probably the best area for bottle shops. Also has One Mile House which is a great lesser known beer bar. They will be having a Dogfish event Wed. with a keg of BB World Wide Stout supposedly. Midtown West also has some good options: Pony Bar, Beer Authority, Beer Culture
I'll add the Ginger Man and Rattle n Hum right in the heart of midtown to skibum's list of must-go bars, but there are many threads on this topic in this sub-forum that cover this topic very thoroughly and should give you all the info you need i.e. addresses, neighborhoods, etc. It's NYC Beer week this week so any bars discussed in any of the NYC threads should have something worthwhile going on.
I haven't been there yet, but George Keeley's on Amsterdam Ave and 83rd st seems to have a pretty decent tap list. It's only a 20 block walk South from your hotel: http://www.beermenus.com/places/16-george-keeley And if you want to venture out to Brooklyn - here is my my walking tour suggestion of beer bars in Williamsburg and Greenpoint.: http://www.beeradvocate.com/community/threads/weekend-trip-to-nyc.151163/#post-2140480
I'll add in some UWS neighborhood options. Dive Bar is close to them (96th and Amsterdam) and should have a few specials during Beer Week. I've never been there, but their other place on 75th is decent (good happy hour). George Keeley on 83rd is my favorite place around, and Amsterdam Ale House on 76th and Amsterdam has good food and plans to put out a few special kegs during the week. Bottle shop...hmm, maybe the Whole Foods on 96th Street?
