Over a long weekend, you'd have plenty of places to eat/drink, though going on three years up here, I've maybe grown weary of it. You have to hit up Red Farm, though go early! Parm is also can't miss. You would be on pretty incredible subway lines with the 1,2,3 on one side and the B,C on the other. That makes it really easy to get up and get out really quickly. For all of it's faults, the UWS is a gentle way to introduce someone to NYC. For all the UWS lacks in food, it's super easy to get down to Hells Kitchen where your food options would be limitless!

The Brooklyn equivalent in terms of gentle NYC introduction might be Park Slope. You're walking distance to threes, probably the best brewery in NYC for ambiance and great beer. Their beers are all good and their guest tap list is insane. Last Friday it featured Grimm, Other Half, and Hill Farmstead among others! (note, Threes is just a few blocks south of taking that 2/3 from the UWS to Atlantic Ave!).

We aren't set on using Homeaway/Airbnb. We are more than open to a hotel as well.

All the fun stuff is in Brooklyn.

I would suggest staying in the Lower East Side - that way you'll still be in Manhattan and will be near the JMZ that will take you straight to Brooklyn or you can grab the F train to Other Half/Threes/Kelso/Strong Rope and plenty of good bars.

LES and The East Village has more bar and food options than UWS.

In any case use my beer map:

If you stick to Manhattan (and I would), you're pretty much gonna be OK wherever you go in terms of eating, drinking, and transportation (except avoid the Upper East Side due to the last requirement).

I agree that the East Village and surrounding area is ideal as long you stick close to a subway stop.
