Hello NYC BA, I am heading down from Massachusetts for the weekend and am hoping to get pointed in the direction of some fun beer related events-by that I mean to include things like tap takeovers, food/beer events, or even just bar recommendations. I know that the bar recommendations request might raise the hackles of some of you who are tired of fielding these requests and would scream something like "have you heard of the $(#@!$ internet", so I apologize in advance, please just ignore my request and have a beer. To every one else- I am visiting a mix of friends, two would be willing to wait in a line to buy 5 beers, and one questions why anyone would drink anything other than PBR so I couldn't likely head to any fully- geeked out beer bars. So am looking for places/things that combine great beer with decent food and entertainment options. Access to beers that I couldn't get in Massachusetts would be a major plus. Also, I would like to visit at least one brewery on Saturday. I'm staying in SoHo. Thanks!

Go to Other Half on Saturday. No can release this weekend, so no shitshow. It's a small space, but great music and chill vibe--grab a few growlers to go, too. From SoHo its an easy ride on the F train.

Saturday I'd go to the Queens beer week kickoff party in Long Island City - right across the river from Manhattan.
Its at the newish beautiful riverfront park at LIC Landing.

Barrier, SingleCut and Finback will be featured - they are some of the best NYC breweries you might not have heard of (besides) Grimm and Other Half.

Thanks-I picked up tickets to this-I spent a little time researching it, but it isn't clear to me if this is a buy a ticket then buy beers when you get it, or if the ticket includes samples. Do you happen to know? Given the low ticket price, I suspect that it just gets you in the door, but of course I am hoping it will allow for some included sampling.

No I have no idea, sorry. Ticket is cheap so hopefully some samples are involved. I'd prefer a pay as you go setup. You can try emailing the organizers.

Sunday Finback is having their 2nd anniversary party with a can and bottle release. I'm not sure if you'd wanna spend a day trekking out to the middle of nowhere Queens to wait in line, but I thought id share anyway.

I don't know that you'd want to go to OH. It's my experience that it's always pretty crowded and there isn't exactly food on site, but a short walk up smith street gives you access to everything.

If you want to see if there are beers you won't find back in Mass, I'd say to visit bottle shops Good Beer, Bowery Whole Foods, and alphabet city beer company. All are pretty close and the food scene down there is incredible.

You could also just look through the list of venues Kanger linked in the NYC thread and then stalk their facebook pages for interesting things.

The nice thing about NYC right now is that pretty much wherever you are, there's great beer to be had nearby.

Also I'd recommend Threes for that Saturday brewery visit! St. Gambrinus is a kick ass nearby bottle shop where you might have a chance for some interesting finds.

Correct me if I am wrong. The only place to get OH cans is at the brewery. You might find some beers on tap but not all can releases. Also, some beers are only available at the brewery on tap.

MOSTLY true. They "show up" around town. If OP wants OH, coming from mass the best bet is, provided access, to bring some trillium, tree house, nebco stuff down or whatever for IP trades.

The best thing about beer in NYC though isn't waiting in lines for whales the same way one can in other locations, it's the consistently great can/bottle/draft access we have.

Welll I am currently sitting on some fresh Trillium Night and Day and some Mosaic Dry hopped Fort Points. I am debating making a Tree House run tomorrow-right now they have Green for cans and I am waiting on what the second offering is. If the Trillium offers sound appealing, please let me know-I would trade for some OH. I got to be honest, I am not sure I would trade tree house for anything, unless it was a make a wish kind of thing. I am hoping to score some NEBCO on the way down as well, but that is certainly up to the beer gods and distro along my route-I am not sure who is more fickle.

I am new here, so I am not sure what the consequences or real meaning of being flagged are- doesn't sound pleasant though- so please, flag authorities don't get me! It seems like I should check out the trade forum. Thanks to everyone else that posted-hopefully I can meet a few of your at the Queens beer week kick off party and at unflagged trade locations.

Ha, the consequences would just be deletion of some posts and probably a warning message plus they'll key your car. It's just that admins try to make sure trading stays in the marked trading forums. It makes for more manageable forums.

They had better not key my Toyota Minivan! I will roll out with my 2 year old toddler on them. Thanks for the heads up!

You are correct, you should not trade your treehouse for Other Half.
