Ive got a buddy headed to NYC next week. What should I tell him to bring back? I like Sours, very sour actually like Russian River Consecration and such, also Imperial Stouts, Double IPA's and most other big beers. Im not sure whats up there that we cant get here so shout out if you do!
Southern Tier is up that way. Use Seekabrew.com to find others. Some Highlights: Founders! (FBS, Double Trouble, Porter) Firestone Walker (Parabola, Sucuba, Double DBA, Double Jack, Union Jack) Goose Island (They might have BCBS) Hoppin' Frog (BA Boris, Boris, Doris) Bruery Hair of the Dog (Limited) Cigar City (limited) Dark Horse (Limitied) You never know what kind of beers you'll find, but you can tell him breweries to look out for.
NY has among the best access to other states breweries in the whole country. Do you know where he'll be exactly? With some details, maybe i can recommend a good beer store. there are hundreds of options he may encounter and lots of good breweries that make sours available in NY .
Sixpoint has some good offerings. You'd probably enjoy their "Resin" if you like DIPAs - I'm having one now. For sour beer, they also just released a Leipziger style Gose - but I believe that it's available in draft only, so send a growler.
We get sixpoint in Texas. GI sours are pretty good(Lolita & Juliet) . If you want full on sour which I can see you do. Try to track down bruery muther funker(Cali). If you haven't had it yet, bcbs. The go to standard for what a bourbon barrel stout should be. Prett plentiful right now up there. Otherwise stock up on boxers next time it comes around. Maybe hit up freetail in San Antonio when they have some sours bottled. Other gold mines north of New York but that prolly won't work. They're are some others like weyerbacher riserva, Cisco , Lawson's, hill farmstead, etc.... But you'll prolly need a trading partner to get those. I'd look for the basics. Bourbon barrel and standard sours. Goose island, jolly pumpkin, maybe Cisco or cascade(if you're lucky).
I'm sure there are others with more experience than me but shit... Stock up on founders, pretty things, southern tier, bruery , uinta(crooked series), and some goose island.
You might be better-served asking in the Mid-Atlantic forum. I assume New York's distribution is god-like compared to our own. Try to score some whaelz bro!
Nice. Thanks guys, my buddy is headed to the upper west side but plans to hit Brooklyn brewery too. I thought about asking up there but they wouldn't be as apt to know what we don't have... This list is more than he can carry lol
When I visit NYC, I usually try and make a day trip to philly (it's an hour train ride) to get some Russian River.
Flower Power if fresh, but latest batch should be relatively fresh. Captain Lawrence Freshchester Pale Ale is very good also, if it is fresh, problem is they dont bottle date.
