Kinda concerned by how little base malt you have. Let us know how it turns out!

Fair point. If you take the oat milk out of percentages, base malt is about 60%. So, mash will be just about 60% MO, 12% flaked oat, and 28% specialty malt.

Are you going to make your own oat milk. Might be worth the added effort there’s probably salt and weird additives in the store bought

Got some store bought Oat Milk for this batch. Will see how it turns out. If it is good, will probably just stick with it.

I’ll have to look up how to make my own Oat Milk tho.

Water and oats 4:1 n blender pulse a few times then strain through cheesecloth. Super easy. You can add vanilla if it would suit the beer style. When do you add the oat milk I have yet to try this

@chavinparty , will keep cold and add a little over a quart per 5 gallon batch at flameout. Saturday am doing a 3.5 gallon batch and adding 24 oz. Will be taking the volume added into account when sparging (-24 oz).

Forget the vanilla for a sec. why this instead of just mashing flaked oats?

Perhaps the blender treatment accomplishes something very different from the mash. I just don't know what that is. If nothing, it is simply an extra step.

I think the oat milk is another way to get the protein and the oat flavor without worrying about stuck sparge from gummy mash.

Could go Oat malt too I suppose. Never used it before though, I don’t know if the malting process changes the flavor versus unmalted.

Would be interested to hear thoughts on this.

At the low-moderate levels you see flaked oats or oat malt in recipes, I haven't noticed a difference. Oat malt would be better for a mash though, if only because it has some hulls going on. I would guess you would see some flavor impact as the % of grist rose towards 50%. I guess the stuck sparge could be a reason to try something outside of a normal mash.

Don't know, but I love experimenting, so if it sounds good, try it.
Remember when hops were just in the boil and a bit for dry hopping???

    I say run that blender

I’ve done a smash pale ale with just tf&s oat malt that was great. Actually surprised the gluten free train hasn’t gone this route. My last neipa had 15-20% oat malt and came out great. The difference between oat malt and rolled oats is minimal but I think the rolled oats give more body per lb for whatever reason
