Hey everyone my brother and I are working on a oatmeal stout recipe we plan on brewing soon, its our first one of these but I'm stuck on the hops... Not sure what a good amount would be for a 6 gallon batch or what hops would be best for that matter. I just don't want to end up with an overhopped oatmeal stout. any experiences or suggestions??

If you want to brew it to style and not over-hopped, my advice would be to use any English hop, 60 minute addition only, 30-ish IBUs.

I like fuggles in my stouts. But that's me.

I use Northern Brewer for my Oatmeal Stout; bittering addition (60 minutes) only.

    Cheers!

I avoid citrus hops for most stouts. I like to use Sterling, Willamette and Goldings. The amount of bitterness depends on how sweet the beer will finish. Sweeter stouts will get up to 60ibu. Dryer stouts will get closer to 40. I typically do 60/30/15 minute hop additions. Just my personal preference.

EKG or Fuggles will do quite well for English styles. Mt. Hood or Northern Brewer for American would be my first choices.

I like things like Sterling, and Northern Brewer.. Clean and not really in the way of the grist. I keep it under 35-40 IBU's.

I did an oatmeal stout with 1oz Nugget @ 40 min, and 2oz Fuggles @ 8 min. Was really happy with the end result, the bitterness blended well with the vanilla beans and roasted grains without overpowering it.

Just rebrewed this weekend with the same hop profile, but adjusted the Nugget to 30min addition. Just to see what difference it would make.
