That time of the year again folks.

    https://www.beeradvocate.com/events/info/85272/

Personally, I plan on heading over Thursday afternoon (tomorrow), on what's looking to be a very warm afternoon. Time and my liver allowing, I hope to stop by HOTD to see what they have on offer during OBF (in the past they've had kegs of Matt, AFTW and Cherry Fred on tap, and even a left over firkin of Bob one year), before picking up my good wife from work. Saturday I'm planning to run on over to Bailey's for their annual anniversary party, after putting in a few hours at the office.

At least for me, this is always the very best weekend of the year for beer and wine related events in PDX (Sunday I plan to run on over to Linnfield college in McMinnville for the annual grand tasting for the International Pinot Noir Celebration). IMHO, even for beer saturated Portland Oregon, I think this weekend qualifies as a pretty outstanding time to be in town.

I, too, am looking forward to Bailey's anniversary party this weekend. And perhaps to the leftovers which may be available on tap afterwards.

Edit: I see that Imperial Bottle Shop's 5th Anniversary party is this Saturday too.

Puckerfest has been going on??? jeez, im out of the loop.

OBF snuck up on me this year. might be tough to make it, as im escaping into the woods to go fishing and swimming on the N. Fork of the santiam.

as for Hair of the Dog, im going to try and pop over today. They have bottles of Bourbon Barrel aged Vermont maple syrup for sale......and i love pancakes. even better, Alan threw a bunch of Adam into the barrels, so sometime next year there should be a BBA Maple Adam.....yum.

also on tap right now is a tequila BA Adam. While PNC remains one of my all time HOF beers, Tequila barrels are hit or miss for me when BAging beers.......but, i will try for science

I almost feel as if PNC is an anomaly, as I've generally been pretty unimpressed with the tequila aged beers I've tried (and I really, really like good tequila). Were it not for PNC, I would tend to think that Tequila barrel aging is just a bad idea.

However, a tequila BA Adam is too intriguing not to give it a try. As always, I plan to park right around the HOTD tasting room, and walk over the bridge to the fest from there. So that'll make it very convenient to pop into HOTD for a taster before picking up the wife from work.

I recently had a Tequila BA Imperial Pilsner that was delicious. Maybe like Gin BA beers, Tequila barrels tend to work better with lighter styles?

Could be. I have had some gin barrel based pils, IPA's and saisons that I thought were pretty good. So far, the few tequila based beers I've had were either stouts or strong ales. Outside of the PNC, I wasn't a huge fan of any of them.

The PNC was so good I was tempted to use the word genius and brewer in the same sentence.

Was thinking the exact same thing. Was also at the 20th & remember the Maple Fred fondly. Hope to try the descendant soon.

it was one of the cheapest (ticket wise) beers at the fest. probably the 1st or 2nd beer i had. i then went and tried everything else and decided to camp in front of the maple fred booth until i could barely walk. good times

I'm sure you already know this, but the syrup is a tad expensive. $35 for a liter bottle.

So is there anything on the beer list that anyone's particularly excited about any particular beer or brewery?

I downloaded the app but I'm not sure it's all that helpful . For example I wasn't able to find the answer to :

"is it true that each day will have the same beers available?"

"do some beers cost more tokens than others?"

Can’t confirm, but I think they did away with specialty tent. So most all beers should be same price.

They usually have backup beers that start to cycle through when popular beers run out

Tequila BA Adam is very good. Not my ideal beer for 100° temps, but very solid.

Just to add to derftron's response...

As he indicated, there is no specialty tent this year. All beers cost one token to taste (tokens are a dollar a piece, no matter what quantity you buy them in). If you're so in love with a beer that you want a full glass, I believe it's 4 tokens to do that.

In theory, the same beers are available every day. However, it's not unusual for some of the more popular beers to run out by Sunday, so I would keep that in mind. This year hazy IPA's and "milkshake" IPA's are all the rage, with Oregon City Brewing and Pfriem having the longest lines I saw yesterday. I would not be surprised if a lot of those beers are no longer available by Sunday afternoon.

Generally, Thursday afternoon is the best time to go (which is when I went), but even at 2:30 there was a pretty sizeable crowd. While I didn't have to wait more than minute in line to sample most beers, the wait approached 5 minutes for a few of the more popular beers. My point being that if anyone plans to go today or tomorrow, it would be my recommendation that you try to arrive as close to opening bell as possible, or expect to encounter a pretty long wait for some of the more popular beers.

And as a final comment... just my two cents of course, but I thought the best beers I tried yesterday were the pils from Fremont (what an enjoyable, easy to drink beer), the milkshake IPA from Pfriem (to no great surprise), and (biggest shock of all) of all things the coconut nutty blond from Caldera (it tasted like an excellent helles lager, with some nice nuances of coconut and nuts).

    thanks for the responses guys.
I went yesterday they were some lines thankfully the trees provide some shade for has been an unusually hot Portland week. looks like the weather is going to be better today and tomorrow so if anyone's going it should be pretty nice.
I have to say it blows me away how different the Portland skyline looks every time I come here, and specially dramatically different from Waterfront Park.
The best beers I had were a wine barrel aged IPL /mixed culture thing from Good Life called "Long Acronym" and a stout called "Goo" from Heretic. Also liked Boneyard's wine barrel pale ale with orange called "Pinot Pulp" and a tequila barrel gose called "Mezcal a Gose" from Kells.

Im looking forward to Bailey's/Upper Lip party tomorrow. Heard about a cantillion keg and Fremont Rusty Nail and some other interesting stuff.

Might go to Loyal Legion for Breakiside anniversary beers today.

I was very happy to see that keg of Goo at the fest. I had it on tap here in town a month or so back, but could find absolutely nothing about it online or on the Heretic brewing website. I liked it so much, that with some trepidation, I added it to the data base (I was worried I had the name wrong, or that maybe it was actually made by Heretic - the bar in town where I had it, isn't always real careful about getting their information right on the beer board).

    I agree, it's a VERY good beer.
