I should have taken more from the second cellar, mostly his growlers, and then his 15 gal brewing rig, but alas, I did not. Here are other shots of the wine cellar - not terribly large cellar but the selection was phenomenal.

The Remy Martin Louis XIII cognac is one of those $3K varieties - his teenage daughter's friends found the wine cellar and used this for mixed drinks - he made her promise to replace it once she graduates from college and gets a job!

...and a little further than that a locked room with Whisky priced like a used car.

Unless "doc" is being used in some way I don't understand in the OP, it sounds like you need to go to med school then all will be good

and this why I constantly get sick and tired of people whining (HA see that!! pun!) about beer prices on here.

when the 4 pack of Wake N Bake I just picked up today is sold for 40 dollars then come talk to me maybe...

Med school, then do something in radiation/oncology - they seem to make lots o' money. Both visits this weekend were to fully catered/butler'd affairs.

It's certainly a roller coaster ride - at least we're in the round of 16 for UCL! Fingers crossed on the draw

Some wineries have kept some of the highly collectible's at relatively reasonable prices on their mailing lists, although, they do trade at least double in the secondary market. In my short time collecting beer, it does seem that it is headed in a similiar direction.

I do definitely agree to a certain extent. It's pretty evident that a lot of "special" beers are under-priced, given the lines and general drama that takes place around releases.

But as a stand alone point, the fact that wine/whisky can be several hundreds (or even thousands) of times more expensive than beer, has no bearing on whether or not you're getting a good deal on the beer you're buying. If one person pays $50k for a new BMW M5, and another pays $40k for an entry level Camry, then one of them is getting a steal and the other is getting the shaft, irrespective of the fact that a third person is buying a superyacht for $300m

It basically is a perception of the product, yes totally. It's like this simply because beer is not wine. Consumers totally perceive those products differently in the United States.

Yes. Even a case of 1989 Thomas Hardy's Ale might be (conceivably) obtained -with some effort- for less than that original shelf price of Petrus as in the OP's cited example!

I suppose I should ask the wine collectors, not here, but...

I often see the word "investment" used. So do many wine collectors actually sell their bottles?
I have a couple friends that like to use that word but they don't seem to have any intention to do anything but drink said bottles themselves. I assume others are actually using it as in investment?

Yes, I both drink them for enjoyment and sell them as well. My other friends who are big collectors do the same. As with any investment, at some point it makes sense to liquidate when the price is right. Also, over time, your palate changes, and what you have liked no longer appeals to you. This has happened a number of times and I have sold off parts of my collection.
The key is to try many things, keep your eye on the market, buy what you like that has appeal to others and yourself, and at least be able to get your investment out of it if/when your palate changes or the price is right

That's nuts. I would hope my kids are brought up well enough to know how to respect alcohol and nice things in general to not pull something like this.

If you only have the occasional bottle of something nice I can see this happening, but they obviously put a lot of time and money into something they should educate their kids on. Whether or not they can/should drink.

Edit: Just read "daughters friends". That makes more sense, but I'd still be pissed!

That's why I have a lock and an alarm on my cellar that let's me know if the door has been opened.

Agreed. Most of the time you don't go in with the intention of buying to sell, but like all things if the price outweighs your need for the item, you sell.

I once read an article by Robert Parker who said that many wine collectors have wines in their cellars which should have been drunk long ago.The belief that wines constantly improve with age leads to many faded bottles.
