Obsession or just a hobby?

Who's obsessed with brewing, who just enjoys it as an occasional fun activity?
I started brewing 20 years ago with pre-hopped no boil kits, but within 2 years was doing all grain. Now I have 12 kegs on tap, a 3-tiered 10gallon AG system, 200 beer glasses, and a storage room full of base and specialty malts. We have a couple of big homebrew parties every year, vacations are planned around beer selection . For me (and somewhat for my wife)homebrewing is a lifestyle, not just a hobby. I couldn't imagine just having one or two varieties of homebrew available-when I get under 50 gallons on hand I start getting nervous.

I'm obsessed but no where near where you're at. I will be on your level some day....50+ gallons on hand at all times.....impressive stuff. I'm working on it though, just upgraded to a 10 gallon system from my 5 gallon!

    Cheers!

That's definitely obsession. In a good way. I hope I get there some day.

I'm a turkey fryer and a larger apartment (or house) away from turning into obsession mode.

Well, you have summed up what I have said, "Not a hobby, it is a lifestyle."
If you have your year focused around the NHC, it is a great time of the year. Prost!

"It's a lifestyle." <-- right on. Beyond that, I'm one of those guys who's obsessed/passionate/foolish enough to give serious thought to making it a career choice at some point in my life, if/when the corporate-scientific world doesn't float my boat anymore.

I would say more than a hobby, less than an obsession, but definitely a lifestyle, too.

I always tell people after they brew their first batch, "Welcome to the obsession."

I would say that I am obsessed with my hobby. Even though I have 4 kegs left I feel that I am running short on beer. I start planing my next brew when I am making a fresh batch.

I recently posted this in another thread:

There is a great saying I read somewhere: “Give a man a beer and waste an hour. Teach a man to brew and waste a lifetime.”

    Cheers!

To me, 'obsession' would mean I'm in to absolutely nothing else and it's destroying my life so I can't call it that. I am definitely really in to homebrewing.

At this point it's really as much a necessity as anything. I have to brew beer or else we don't have beer on tap. Between my wife, me, and guests we consume about 200 gallons of beer per year.

It's a hobby for me at this point due to financial issues and that will continue to hinder it until my masters pays itself off. Otherwise it would be taking over

Definitely an obsession already. I have two fermenter buckets (8 and 6.5 gal), a two gallon Mr Beer keg, a three gallon better bottle, and a 5 gallon carboy, and I've had them all going at once already! My closet is full of beer, either fermenting or in bottles, plus there's my "cellar!" And this is just in a small apartment! Soon I will have more space, and then it's surely going to be God Save The Queen, because I'll be free to brew all I want! Kegging system, all grain, and refrigerated fermentation control coming soon....

I hope not, I can't stand cats! :grimacing:

But yeah, I will soon be at least in the realm of "crazy."

Well, the ‘good news’ is that with all of that beer around you are going to be very popular with your beer drinking friends!

    Cheers!

If I called it an obsession, my wife might step in and suggest something more productive.

If I call it a hobby, she backs it 100% and enjoys the fruits of my labor

A tractor trailer delivers our hop and grain order. ( group order ) We need a forklift and loading dock to receive it. I hope that's not obsessive.

After a few minutes of thought... I came to the conclusion that obsessed is pretty accurate. What pushed me over the edge was my recent labeling decision.

I am starting to put QR codes on all of my labeling so it's easier to keep track of stock. All I need to do is scan it with my phone and log it in. Current stock is 52.2 gals: in 292 bottles of various size, 4 kegs on tap, and 3 kegs waiting. I also tend to plan ahead, 5 batches planned for July, and other batches scheduled through mid 2013 already.

I think I'm still in 'hobby' mode. Golf is my obsession and I don't think it's possible to have two. I am going to have to upgrade to 10 gallon batches. 5 gallon batches go very quickly once friends and coworkers find out you brew.
