I will be on the OBX (Corolla) area Sep 7 for a week. In the group are a couple of beer fanatics. I have a few questions. What is available in the area that is unique (local) or outstanding (from anywhere)? I live in Del. so we do not get a ton of stuff distributed there. Where is the best place to buy? Any local hotspots that would have great craft beers? Thanks Wayne
I visit the below places for bottles - Trio has good stuff on tap usually as well. http://obxtrio.com/ http://www.chipswinemarket.com/
I used to think Chips had the better selection till I was down there again this past weekend. Chips had nothing that Trios didn't but Trios had several things (including limited stuff) that Chips didnt - now, this could very easily mean that Chips had sold out their allocations while Trios still had stock...
Outer Banks Brewing Station had some tasty standard beers on while I was there. Really nice saison and brown ale. The food is also tasty. Would recommend hitting that brewery while you're out there. Also went to Weeping Radish which was about a 30 minute drive from OBX. They had fantastic house-made sausages, but the beers really weren't very good.
Don't know which part of the Outer Banks you're staying in but, if you have the time, you can drive over to Manteo and check out Full Moon. Have found the food to be hit or miss but the brews are pretty solid. Have heard/read good things about Weeping Radish which, if you're taking the usual route from DE/MD, you'll go right by in Grandy but for me, not so much. Your mileage may vary. Otherwise, as noted above, Chip's and Trio are very good; as of my last trip there last year, Trio had more taps than Chips. And Outer Banks Brewing Station is usually worth a stop. Sweet T's in Duck is a nice little spot which could be dangerous as this year we're staying a short walk away. This year I'm also hoping to get up to The Shack in Corolla to check them out. To compare what you can get in NC versus what you can get in DE, check out www.seekabrew.com but, keep in mind that, not all beers distributed in NC make it to the Outer Banks.
