A local liquor store has both the 12 OZ bottles they also have the Bombers. The 12 OZ bottles cost $6.99. The Bombers are $25.99. That makes no sense to me. Has anyone else seen pricing like this?

I've seen it with Three Notch'd Bourbon Barrel Biggie Smores on draft vs a bomber price. In other words, I could have gotten 2 "proper" pint pours (not 9 oz) in a night and still be cheaper than a bomber I saw on a counter 8 feet away.

It was the same last year. KBS 4 packs would be around $20-25 with large format bottles being the same price.

I don't recall reading a good explanation as to why that is though.

Most of the Founders Barrel Series releases have been similar to that. Seems like the 4 pack is close to the same exact price as the bomber. At least Founders "Bomber" size is 750ml not 22oz.

The 4-packs and bombers were both $23-ish here

Hmm. Just over half the volume of beer for around the same price. The overhead for Founders on those 750ml bottles must be astronomical.

Maybe they were hand bottled by vestal virgins!?!

Pretty typical for Bombers/750s to be priced higher per ounce than 4/6pks. I’ve never heard an acceptable answer, just “that’s the way it is.”

As long as dum dums continue to buy the bombers for that cost they will keep existing.

    I've heard two reasonable explanations.

In the case of at least some breweries (no idea how many) the 750ml bottles are filled by hand and then manually packaged into cases for shipment. Both of these increase labor costs.

In the case of a bottling line that can handle either 12 or 22 oz bottles, the line has to be manually re-set from a bottling run of one size bottle to be able to handle the other size bottle, creating labor costs and down time. Then it has to be manually reset to handle the other size. Also in some breweries the 22oz bottles are manually packaged into cases for shipment.

4 packs in WNY were no more than 22 and change. The bombers of CBS were 24 and change. No complaints from me :sunglasses:

Just can’t comprehend buying a bomber when 4 packs are so readily available. Bit the bullet when CBS was bomber only though

If true than why would a brewery bother with 22/750 format. More work for the same or less $ and you piss the consumer off in the process.

    Enjoy

Bombers are pointless. Manual handling labor, more expensive bottle bought in lower volume, boxes bought in lower volume, larger label bought in lower volume, etc, etc probably increase cost a bit. And then they jack the profit margin on top of the increased bottling cost. In the end, I expect they make more profit per ounce with bombers, and suckers buy them. I buy them only when that is the only way to get a beer I really want.

You'll have to ask those customers who buy those larger sizes. (Some have said on here that they want the Bomber since they don't want to have to buy 4 or 6 pack to try a new beer.)

If folks stop buying the large format bottles then the brewers will stop packaging in those sizes (which some say is starting to happen with the 22 oz bottle).

It's happened before, it can happen again.

Time and labor to package a bomber versus time and labor for a 12 oz option.
I'd imagine the bombers are packaged on entirely different system that operates a heck of a lot slower. Sixty bottles a minute versus the several hundred a minute they probably can get for their main packaging hall system.

If you are willing to pay $20-25 for a bomber of this beer than the 'answer' is yes.

For me this is a pass.

    Cheers!
