4 pack at a smaller Chicago liquor store was $25.99, with a stock pile on the floor to boot. The markups are frustrating.

Would you mind sharing with us the price you pay (wholesale price) for those two formats?

    Cheers!

This seems to be common across a bunch of different beers. I used to by 750's of Trois Pistoles from Unibroue until I found out that 4 packs were almost the same price. For double the amount of beer, how is it even a choice?

Don't the larger format beers "age" better?

    “$4.325 per 12oz single

    $14.22 per 750mL”

The below arithmetic assumes that the Wholesale Distributor is using the same percentage markup for the two formats.

The price per ounce for the 12 ounce bottle is 36 cents.

The price per ounce for the 25.4 ounce (750 ml) bottle is 56 cents.

The percentage change between 36 cents and 56 cents is 56%.

So, Founders is pricing the big bottle 56% higher than for the 12 ounce bottles.

I doubt that the increase in packaging costs (labor, differing bottle, etc.) even comes close to accounting for that 56% increase.

Thanks to @LakerLax21 for providing the wholesale prices.

    Cheers!

I agree, they just use it as a reason because many folks will believe it.

Great to see honesty from a retailer concerning profit margins on a sought-after product.

Like someone else mentioned I too generally avoid bombers unless this is the only available format for a beer I am particularly motivated to get my hands on. The only real exception is if I'm buying a gift for someone and there is an unstated understanding that we're exchanging low-ticket items, as in the case of a co-worker/acquaintance.

There is a local brewery in my area that has the balls to package their beer in crowlers on the regular. 32 ounces of beer, in an oil can. This I consider patently insulting and I just stopped patronizing the brewery, along with 10 or so of my pals.

KBS was $9 a bottle in my area which is extremely annoying but it's a tradition so I bought 2 bottles. In the case of overpriced 12 ounce bottles, I generally stay away from them out of principle, not because it's financially crippling.

Not quite sure of some of your terminology - "on the regular." - but while it is unusual, perhaps, for a brewery to offer their beer only (?) in 32 oz. cans, why is it insulting or require "balls" on the part of the brewer?

Lots of non-packaging breweries/brewpubs offer only growler fills - typically the standard ½ gal/2 liter, sometimes 32 oz. quart / or a liter - seems to me a properly-filled and sealed "crowler" would be preferable to that. A "2 pint" can of fresh beer to go?

Bombers would be tolerable if the price per ounce was similar to crowlers (and growlers). My favorite local brewery offers crowlers at $8 or $15 depending on ABV. That's quite a savings over most bombers, or even their tap prices, and is fresher than a bomber.

Supersize all of the reasons folks have said that they don't like bombers, and add in that 32 ounces of beer in a non-resealable container is only an option for me if I'm sharing or if I don't mind getting blasted.

I can see this. Not my preference but understandable.

If the beer is available in pounders one day a week and it involves standing around in a line to pick it up, and then becomes available the following week or two in a crowler can at approximately 1.75 times the price per ounce, in an undesirably cumbersome format, that's where I draw the line.
