I didn't know personally. I was going by what someone had posted previously in this thread. It does make you wonder where the crossover between the various beers occurred, if an older batch of Morningwood was victimized but the older batch of Hipster was not.

Thanks for making my point Vette-ss. I do believe all the problems with the barrel-aged beers are related. Also, none of the other years have had the tart problem. Something seems fishy here or should I say tart.

I just think it seems a bit contradictory that so far the response is why are you letting this sit around, drink it fresh....when clearly even the brewery lets it sit around for extended periods and will then sell it to a customer. I know one thing is I don't have a lot of faith in my stash of Hazels. And now I'm even wondering how old that was because even though it was released in February, I forgot until seeing the Facebook post that they did sell some on Black Friday also. Same batch? Thought it was a great beer and was saving some for out of state friends. But I won't be down there for a few months and wondering if it will make it that long.

Here is the reply from Odd Side Ales - have to respect a company that takes care of problems, they have earned my repeat business...

Thank you for contacting us about your recent unhappy purchase of Java Chip Stout. As you know we have just entered the market of Chicago. We were received with open arms and are very excited to be distributing in your area. Our initial shipment of our core beers flew out of the distributor’s warehouse very quickly. There was a request for more variety so we pulled some of our current inventory from our Michigan distributor’s warehouse. Unfortunately one of the pallets of Java Chip found its way onto the Chicago bound truck. Your date helped us out a lot, as we have found out that our Michigan distributor did not rotate their inventory correctly. That was the first batch from a small bottle run, and should have left their warehouse immediately. We are still waiting for answers on how this happened from them. It was never our intention to send this beer to your market. We are working with our Illinois distributor to have the product pulled from the shelves. We do have a sales rep and a production guy who visit the Chicago market frequently, they would like to replace your 6 pack with a different one of your choosing and buy you a pint or two at one of the next events we have in Chicago if that works for you. Again, thanks for letting us know

Looks like their Funk Fest in June can prominently feature all their BA Stouts.

lulz, still doesn't explain why the beer soured that quickly, or what is causing the souring. To their credit, they have agreed to replace your beer.

Their reluctance to address similar problems with their BBA stouts is going to result in a loss of loyal customers.

I have had 5 Hipster Brunch in the past week. Mine definitely have what I would describe as a mild cherry-like tartness. It is definitely not the same beer that it was even a month ago. I had full intentions of getting through all of my bottles within 6 months and am now left with about 10 that are bad. Shame on me for not drinking them quicker. That said, I believe it is a poor business decision for Odd Side to do nothing. Just offering people the opportunity to return them for other Odd Side bottles or brewpub credit would go a long ways, in my view, to minimize the negative goodwill that is going to occur. Just my .02.

Drinking a Hipster Brunch (MFG date of 11/18/15) that I traded for now and like @onespartan I'm definitely getting a cherry-like tartness on the end.

I didn't get a chance to try this fresh so I have nothing to compare it to, but, based on reading this thread, I'm not alone in detecting off/undesired flavors.

Is this beer, in my mind, undrinkable? No. I probably will be finishing the bottle within the next half hour. However, is it what I (and a hundred odd BAs) signed up for when we purchased/traded for this beer? Definitely not.

I agree and say that Odd Side needs to man up for a mistake on their end. There is no way a 10% Imperial Stout develops these off flavors this quickly without the influence of an unintended micro-organism. There needs to be some kind of retribution to the people that attempted to support this growing brewery and were screwed as a result of that brewery's mistake.

I understand they're a small brewery without the wallet size of Goose Island (and therefore AB), but straight out denying there's a problem when people have come forth, in good conscience and before publicly posting about it, is wrong.

EDIT: Just want to clarify I was made aware of this thread before I traded for the beer, so definitely not blaming the other BA at all.

Also, is this infection also affecting BBAIMM and Hazel's?

I wonder what @LSKennedy thinks about all of this? There is a rumor around town that he got stuck with 10 of the 27 cases that his Kia muled to the east side of the state.

Maybe @LSKennedy can have his own funk fest if this true.

I am amazed at the number of ways the same people can say the exact same things over and over again.

Let's keep talking about It incessantly for the next 8 months. I hope the future releases are like previous years where us faithful OSA customers can walk in a few days after the release and the get beer from the brewery we support 365...

If OSA has shady business practices then they deserve to be put on blast. Sh*t, if I hadn't seen this, I might've traded for a grip of soured Hazels/Hipster in the coming weeks.

If for whatever reason this puts an end to hoarding and stocking up for trades or what have you, then I'm sadly glad it happened. If you need that east coast IPA that bad get in the car and go get it. Gas is 2.00 a gallon. If you are just stocking up for the year sorry. Plenty of other good beers out there.

Ironically enough, it seems like more than normal has hit the FT side of this in the last week or two.

That an interesting perspective, because as a local that regularly supported the brewery I'm feeling a bit betrayed by the way they are handling this situation.
