Hey folks. I'm drinking one on draught at Old Chicago and I don't think it's as malty as it used to be. Based on my review in 2010. Am I imagining it. What say you?
No idea, but my moms is a huge 90 fan and has been since when I moved her out here 7 years ago. That said- I picked some cans of it up for her yesterday... she would definitely whine if it wasn’t malty enough hahaha Not sure that really answers your question, but I hope that it gives you a little context
I'm eagerly waiting for her take on it now. I would be surprised if she said it was as malty as she remembered it. Thanks for being the only fella in Colorado to reply. I expected more people to chime in.
I only drink 90 Shilling at restaurants (usually Chinese). I don't think Ive ever bought a sixer in the 20+ years I've lived in Colorado. It is definitely a go-to when I'm eating at a place with a limited beer list. I'll let you know in five years when I eat out again of it's different.
Interesting. I had one that I enjoyed a few months ago (on tap), but it isn't a beer I drink as often as I should. With things warming back up, 90 Shilling has long been my favorite beer to pair with BBQ of all sorts.
I tried to feel out my moms thoughts on this beer now versus 7 years ago this afternoon while she was sipping on one... but its difficult because she didn’t have a ton of beer context prior to moving here. 90 is her first real beer love. She made that clear today hahahah I did my best to ask her if she felt like it’s changed at all without leading her, so to speak, but ultimately it seems like she thinks it’s a little lighter though not more bitter or anything... in conclusion, I think Bitter Bill might be onto something
Odell has gone full-on down the "more hops" rabbit hole. I wouldn't mind if they hopped the hell out of 90 Shilling instead of lightening it up. That sounds right up my alley for once. I stopped into the Odell location in River North over the weekend and like 2/3 of their lineup was an IPA of some sort. Luckily they know what they're doing...but everything does start to taste pretty similar.
I picked up a sixer last night and had one. It's been a few years since I had 90 shilling, but it did seem a little less sweet than I remember. That was the main reason I only drank it out instead of buying it. It was always just a little to thick for my taste, and I wouldn't want to have more than one. It's been well over a decade since I've been to Scotland, but I really loved Caledonian 80 shilling because it is just so easy to drink (a lot of that is due to cask conditioning). Odell's never really hit that spot for me (it is higher gravity/abv than the 80 shilling).
