Sorry to add a new thread here just for a 1 question. But did not see a specific thread on ODell here.
I just picked up some 6pk of IPA and Myrcenary cans dated 11-16-18. Does ODell date 6 months out? So canned on 6-16-18? Thx.

In the past it was 4 months out, I believe. Could be wrong and it could have changed over the years.

Could it be a drink by date?

It is a drink by date, but he wants to know when it was canned.

Gotcha, I was thinking it was the canned on date, which would have meant they canned it in the future

Can’t fucking stand the “drink by” date. Just put a “Canned On” date. Is it that difficult?? I’d love to hear an argument as to why the “drink by” date is still a thing...

Same reason why an expiration date is a thing. Makes more sense from a food industry perspective.

Might not be the most reliable tool but at least expiration dates are about food safety, not "quality." Having that information I think is needed.

Well it does alert retailers, some of whose employees aren’t craft beer geeks like us, when to pull it off the shelf.

Yes, this is my understanding as well. Their 12oz beers have a best by expiration date 120 days from the packaging date. OP, it's likely your beer was packaged on July 16th.

I prefer “canned on” date. Even 4 months out is ridiculous.
4 months out puts it at 7-4-18. That’s still old by my book. But picked up while in Vegas along with Revision cans. Can’t get ODell in California. And it’s been pretty dry as far as Revision cans in SoCal.

A 2 month old DIPA is old?? I've had Mercenary that "old" before. No harm, no foul. Shrugs.

Why is this even an issue? It most likely was canned on/around mid-July. It’s a canned DIPA, it’s not Stone Enjoy By, or PtE. Drink the remaining cans by mid-September and it’s all good. Moving On.

This isn't true. Expiration dates are almost always about quality. Really no guarantee as to when a product goes bad. Expired food isnt even illegal to sell. Donation places will use things for well past date and have guidelines there for food safety. Like mayo is 3 years past expiry date.

If your beer sits on shelves for that long then you have other issues. Again, give me a “canned on” date. Haven’t seen a legitimate argument yet for a “best by” date. Complete bullshit if you ask me.
