Have had this beer dozens of times, it has always been a slightly hazy light orange color. I just bought 3 4 packs of it with the best by date of 3/21/14 and it is extremely amber colored, thought I might have been crazy until I went back and looked at a couple pics I have taken in the past and compared them to this one, night and day difference. Taste is a little sweeter but still amazing as usual. I am not complaining about the difference in smell of taste if there even is any, just curious if you closer to Odell that have had this beer even more then I have noticed color differences?

    Cheers

    Nick

Last 4 pack I bought a few weeks back, everything was the typical slightly hazy light orange color.

I buy it often, never seen an amber one. Though this could be a side effect of a certain glass. Maybe shorter/fatter? Got a picture?

There ya go, skinny and fat glass, seems to be a bit more malty and not quite as tropical. Still good, just not as good as usual.

Wow, that's weird. Never seen it look anything like that. Contact Odell, I'd be interested in hearing what they have to say about that.

So just called, apparently they are on a new system, still trying to "dial" it in. Asked if I was still enjoying it, I said ya it is good just not as great as it usually is. Normally I would not call but since I bought more then 1 4 pack I decided to... Then she said, "ya we are aware of the issue and trying to dial it in". So I guess that is that, Just finished the bottle there, kind of a burnt malt taste to it, told her that and her response was "ya that makes since". It kind of ended there. So that is what I got.

    Thanks for the update.

They just went through a huge expansion and must have made your batch on the new equipment. Looks like they are being lenient on their quality control though, if they know there are problems and just letting it slide. I guess the problems aren't so much its a "bad" batch though, just that its below their typical standards. Which sucks....because I always have Odell in my fridge, and now I have reason to think twice about my next purchase. Hopefully, they figure the problem out ASAP.

I always just buy 1 4 pack of Mycenary, but we have not had any that fresh here in a while, so I bought 3.... Man I wish I would have got some Abrasive instead. When she told me "they were aware of the situation" I could not help but think, then why do I have these bottles, I know it is not a completely bad batch but still, if you are a brewery and you know it isn't up to snuff, why release it?

Yeah, that sucks. I would be pretty pissed/bummed with Odell if I got bamboozled like that.

Email them and tell them about the conversation you had. I could almost guarantee they will make it right.

I'd agree with Steve on this. You got a defective product and they should make it right. Luckily Odell is usually awesome about this kind of stuff.

I'm curious how different it is on the new system, definitely going to pick up a newer pack to see the differences for myself.

Yup, noticed a big difference in a new batch. Still good, but not the same beer. I emailed them last week, waiting for a response.

I sent them this pic, which shows the color being off. I finally got a response saying they're forwarding the email on and I should hear back shortly.

I was just at Odell today. I had their IPA, which tasted fine, and 90 Schilling which tasted off (not that I really cared since it was free). Hopefully they get their new system dialed in soon.

A recent batch (bottled Nov. 20) of their IPA was a little off as well, but not as much as the Myrcenary. Hop profile was pretty much the same, but it was a darker color than I'm used to.

They'll make it right. I had some issues with their India Barleywine (whole hops in the bottle!) a few years ago and they hand-delivered some new bottles to my doorstep.

i'm curious if the change is due to something like increased kettle caramelization from the new system, or if it's just oxidation. the way you're describing it (darker in color, sweeter, less hoppy) sounds like it could be oxidized. is there a bottle date? perhaps they're just old. or maybe they're experiencing hot side aeration from the new setup?

Certainly not old, best by date is 3/21/14, does not taste oxidized, more of a off burnt malt flavor, the flavor is still fine... I do not pay $10 a 4 pack for fine though:slight_smile:.

I stated in my post that it had been, roughly, a year since I have had Myrcenary. I thought the color was odd as I can't think of any IPA's that have that dark of a hue and I certainly do not remember Myrcenary being this color. But since it has been so long, I did not think too hard on it.

The beer still tasted really good. The smell was fantastic. It's body was very full and malty and I remember thinking too myself that it tasted more like a barleywine than an IPA. Or is that regular, since, again, I haven't had this in quite a while?

FWIW, the sixer of IPA that I bought on Monday tasted like it always does. Like the best damn single IPA in the universe!
