Has anybody else had an infection issue with this latest release Woodcut release? I've had two bottles that were both infected. I'm a huge fan of Odell stuff but I'm wondering if another bottle is worth a shot or if their is a widespread problem with this batch.
This is definitely the first I have heard of any potential problem and this surprises me from Odell if some bottles are infected... What type of off flavors did you get from the "infected" bottles?
Both corks blew off as soon as I loosened the cage and a significant amount of froth poured out. The off flavors weren't really diacetyl or aacetaldehyde, more lactic acid and sour milk. Not what I'd expect from a Barleywine. I got both from the same store so perhaps it's centralized to their shipment. Looking at some of the reviews on here others have noted issues as well though.
They've had issues in the past with poor carbonation and infected beers. Bottles of the Bourbon Barrel Stout a few years ago were effed up.
I've known about some slight carb issues in the past but hadn't heard anything recent. Shit happens I guess... but damn that sucks.
Yup, had an infected 8 myself. Reported to O'dell and returned to store of purchase. Carb was ridiculous and cork blew off like a bottle rocket, but no gushing. Very tart and peppery with no discernible sweetness. I would not recommend getting more or cellaring (especially due to price/bottle) - find on tap if possible!
