Hi. Maybe this isn't the appropriate forum for this question, but I don't want to draw attention to myself for bashing a brewery that I otherwise very much enjoy. Has anyone else gotten off flavors in Sixpoint beers? Year before last it was Sensi Harvest, and now I'm getting it in Global Warmer. It's a slightly sour, garbage/vomit-like smell. It's not as pronounced in the flavor, but it's definitely in the aroma. Also, I'm sure it's not the glass as I ensured multiple times that the glass was cleaned well.

I've only tasted two of Sixpoint's beers. I haven't noticed that particular type of off flavor. However, I rated both very low -- The Crisp lager got 3/10 and Hi-Res IIPA got 6/10. Both I said were way too bland and ordinary. Not impressed. Perhaps you are just more articulate about what actually sucks about them.

Sounds like originated moldy hops to me. Highly doubtful a professional brewery would use them. Dirty tap lines I have seen in breweries!

If you are cleaning your own glass, you must be pouring from a bottle/can. Are these containers dated? Your off-flavor description does not sound typical of an old beer, but maybe you are breaking new ground.

Sounds like the description of Butyric acid:

"Butyric acid is an important flavor compound in a number of foods including beer. However, at concentrations above its beer flavor threshold, it causes "cheesy" or "sickly" off-flavors. Abnormal concentrations in beer can arise due to infections by anaerobic spore-forming bacteria of the genus Clostridium. Investigations into the sources of butyric acid and the bacteria showed that glucose and cane sugar syrups used as adjuncts were involved. The vulnerable areas during syrup manufacture were found to be the handling of the starch slurry during glucose syrup manufacture and the sweet water system in cane sugar syrup manufacture. Wort production was also identified as a potential source of butyric acid both before and after kettle boiling. Clostridium tertium was identified in glucose syrup adjunct tanks during one of the investigations. Good plant hygiene is essential to prevent outbreaks of the bacteria in syrup and brewing plants, particularly during periods of high ambient temperatures and after plant shutdowns. Quality control based on the analysis of butyric acid in adjuncts, wort, and beer and the microbiological detection of anaerobic spore-forming bacteria can prevent butyric acid off-flavors in beer."

Are you close to the brewery. If not you should contact them before you post anything. I recently returned beer in another state to the brewery because it had issues. Also never got that smell in Resin.

I'm a three hour drive from the brewery, so I'm not going to return it. This is only the second time it's happened. The dozens of other times I bought from them everything was great. I did research off flavors, and the smell most closely matches Butyric acid. "Rancid" is the best way to describe it.

I have a question for you in regard to your assertion that the glass was clean.

Was the glass sent through a dishwasher? I only ask because, with the newer laws banning phosphates in detergents, a bad, garbagey smell has been known to occur.

I, myself, have experienced this problem intermittently. Even handwashing several times afterward didn't totally remove the smell.

    Just curious...

Have you contacted Sixpoint to let them know about this issue?

    Cheers!

I've had plenty of Sixpoint beers and never experienced anything like that. I would try messaging them.

Recent purchase of Resin, Bengali and Sweet Action. Can't say I have tasted the above described off flavors. Let Sixpoint know.

    Cheers

I remember sensi harvest having a "cream cheese" note to it. Haven't really drank sixpoint since, now that I think about it..

I had a can of Global Warmer this year that was great, better than last year's, with no off flavors. I thought Tesla had an odd flavor this year, maybe a little diacetyl. I usually don't have a problem with their beers.

There's a marked difference between a personal opinion of a beer and a fundamentally flawed or not well made beer.. Both of those are highly rated to style. You don't have to like it but at least be able to differentiate quality and personal preference

Some of crooked staves first beers had butyric acid. One day it was blue cheese and vomit, the next day pineapples. Sixpoint needs brett...
