For those of you that brewed this, keep us posted. I'm curious what your results are.

    Thanks!

So you've had some bad experiences with the NB HopShots? I usually remove about 3-4 cups of boiling wort, add the hop shot and mix as well and add it back to the boil. I've used them in a lot of heavily hopped beer recently and they've worked out well for me. Curious if you received a bad lot?

In the past I thought they were fine (and the beers made with them were fine), but when compared to what I got from Yakima Valley hops, it was clear that all of the hop shot I've ever bought and used from Northern Brewer was either really old or made with inferior materials (it was dark green and had no aroma; Yakima valley hops extract was bright tan/green and smelt like a hop field).

I've never used the NB stuff, but the Yakima stuff is yellow/green, and it literally smells like an open bag of hops, and when added to the wort, it smells extremely hoppy and fragrant.

Opening both side by side was quite enlightening. Agreed on the Yakima stuff though, smells insane.

So.. this thread is about Off the Topper kit and got side tracked to hop extracts.

Has anyone tried the Off the Topper kit yet?

I have it in primary now, smells fantastic....brewed the pliny clone using hop shots...best beer I've ever had, so I brewed it 5 times this year already. if this beer is half that good it will be excellent.

I just bottled my Off the Topper this weekend from the extract kit. The OG was 1.073 and FG was 1.010. I've never had Heady Topper before so no comparisons, but this beer tasted great on bottling day. Great pineapple flavors, good mouthfeel as well. It's pretty cloudy right now, and got 26 22oz bottles out of it.

Should be a fun tasting day.

Mine is in secondary, and it is very cloudy, I added the second dry hop too soon by accident, so I am leaving in secondary for a while more. It's been two weeks...I may do a third dry hop right before I bottle to make up for my mistake adding 2nd dry hop (I added it when I went to 2nd, it should have been 4 days before bottling). I figure I will lose a lot of aroma being dry hopped so long.

just brewed the extract recipe this weekend. Anyone else who brewed this have oil-like dots floating around in the kettle, possibly from the hop shot?

Tasted this beer after 20 days bottle conditioned and it was still a little green, but just had one after 40 days bottle conditioned and it was fantastic. Looks nice and hazy, lots of aroma. Plenty of initial papaya/mango/apricot, thick mouth feel, and a nice dry crisp bitter finish. Definitely my favorite extract kit to date.

I read that they replaced the Simcoe with a Simply Select Hop Blend recently... I used Simcoe hops in mine. Not sure how that's too different than 30% Chinook and 70% Ahtanum.
