Hey BA's in Pitt.....I am off on a road trip to Pitt to catch the weekend baseball series 4/12-4/14. I am staying maybe 4 miles from the park. Really looking for anyones help in finding a great bottle shop or anywhere that carry's Bells Great Lakes Anchorage Cigar City Jester King Lost Abbey Russian River (Not expecting in Pitt) Bruery or any other local (NO IRON CITY haha) I should be looking out for. I pulled this from seekabrew.com so I'm sure not everything listed will be in Pitt but worth a shot! I'm also aware PNC has one of the best craft selections at any ballpark. Can't wait. (Bar suggestions are welcomed as well) Thanks!
Since you'll have a car, head to House of 1,000 Beers in New Ken. http://beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/15450 They'll have the best selection around, seeing how they get things that don't even make it to PA. (Edit: You are looking at a 25 or so minute drive. But I feel it's worth it. Make sure to grab some Fat Head's Head Hunter!)
I'm not 100% but I believe Cigar City and The Bruery are Philly area only. RR is Philly area too but I've heard people say that some bottles make their way to Pittsburgh.
Thanks guys. Yah I figured I wouldn't find CC or RR but at this point anything works. That 1000beers place looks legit. I see they allow you to mix and match 6ers?
D's Six Pax and Dogz in Regent Square also started carrying some of the Lost Abbey and Russian River lineup.
For most of the things on your list House of 1k beers is your only option. While out that way take the short detour and check out the shaler giant eagle. Once back in the city limits southside would be your one stop shop with plenty of tap options and the carson st deli your bottleshop option. I've stated before in these posts if possible to hit as many possible stops as you can. You can always find something good at any shop at any given time
I haven't been to a Pirates game in about two years, but I don't remember any craft at PNC, just $7 Yuenglings. Great Lakes & Bell's you can find just about anywhere. I've never seen the others, but I don't frequent bottle shops. Deez Six Packs was kinda cool, but a lot of their stock is way old. House of 1000 bottle shops seems legit, but it's almost two hours from me, so I've never been. You can usually find good stuff on tap there though, along with Smokin' Joes, Fatheads, and Mad Mex restaurants.
with house of 1K beers you will pay out a large price for some of the beers. I found heady for 15 a can and Russian rivers for 20, lost abby will be around 25 a bottle. You can't beat the selection though just be prepared to pay for it.
Nothing to add about stores that hasnt been said, but as for pnc park, there has been a great selection. Check this story from last year, it should only be better this year! http://www.examiner.com/article/pnc-park-impresses-with-craft-beer-selection
Thanks guys. I think I got my plan sketched out. As for one more. How's 99bottles right outside the city?
overpriced and not that great of selection. 10 more minutes gets you to Market District Robinson. Much larger selection and much less expensive.
I don't know how it got there, but the House of Beers did have some Cigar City there recently. So, I would ask for it if you stop.
House of 1000 beers has some Jai Alai and Russian River. As for the rest you've mentioned, Giant Eagle Robinson or Shaler are your go to bottle shops.
Fatheads is great. As everyone else says, house has great selection but they should change the name to house of $1000. Duffys, zoes, and liberty beer have great case selection. Liberty still has that $300 case of bolt cutter.
A lot of people make this complaint. The harder to find stuff (RR, Lost Abbey, Bruery, etc.) is priced higher because there's more cost incurred in acquiring it. If you take a look at the "regular" selection (i.e. the stuff you can find at other bottleshops), prices are comparable to or, in many cases, lower than competitors. Granted, Giant Eagle's got everybody underpriced, but there are even some things that ho1k sells for less. Full disclosure: I've worked at ho1k & feel compelled to provide some perspective from time to time.
Fair enough. I have chatted up the staff there before and they were nice people. I asked how they got their 3 floyds and the guy there told me they actually drove to the brewery and bought it. So I understand if they want to mark it up. I know they go through channels to get those beers but I can go also go through similar channels myself. So for other available stuff, it is on par with other hot dog shops in the area. Great tap list though. It's a good place but for someone who is going there for the first time, I would have them know that they will pay 1.5-3x as much for an out of area beer. That's all.
There is a place in Pnc Park that sells some craft. It is a lil pricey but what isn't inside a ballpark. I think it is around section 125 and called beers of the burgh (I think).
