It is not real clear in the verbiage of the bill. If you read the part about being "labeled", I would assume that a label could be placed on bottles once they hit the state..

I was ecstatic when I heard this news yesterday!!! Oh happy day indeed for us craft beer aficionados in Ohio! This passed the Ohio House last week and passed in the Ohio Senate earlier today. And if I am not mistaken this becomes law with or without the governor's signature. It is nice to see the neo-con GOP controlled state legislature doing something right for a change that will help to benefit an industry that's been growing steadily in this state, as it has in pretty much the entire country and even the world for that matter, over the past 10 to 15 years. It's nice to know that the neo-con GOP controlled state legislature trusts that beer drinkers in this state are now responsible enough to make their own decisions about the beers the choose to consume, because until now they've always somehow trusted wine and spirits drinkers to be able to do this but not beer drinkers. The question is, which Ohio brewery will be the first to brew and release a beer that's over 12%. I have to believe there's already some breweries that in this state already have a beer or 2 in a tank somewhere that's over 12% that they've made just for fun and or their own personal enjoyment, just not for sale to customers, etc. I'm not sure how soon the law actually takes effect, but I wouldn't be surprised if that very shortly after it does we get news of a brewery in this state having a beer that's over 12% being served at their brewpub/tap room or being bottled, etc.

What's the AVB % limit for beers in PA? I always thought there was no limit in PA, or at least that it was/is well over 12%.

There is no limit on pa but we have more stupid laws. Basically, you can only buy beer by the full case unless it's from a resturaunt.

That. Plus a whole host of what I would consider "restrictive/inconvenient" laws/rules that make consumers jump through hoops. Lived in many states...this one is one of the worst. I just love visiting family in Michigan where you can walk into virtually any store and buy beers.

I would have taken Ohio's 12% ABV cap over PA's stupid sale laws, any day! That is by far a much worse restriction IMO.

With this going into effect in just about two weeks has anybody heard any clarifications on how retailers may be able to handle beers that aren't specially labeled from the brewery?

I'm really hoping some of the bottle shops I visit will be able to sell already produced versions of >12% beers by just adding an extra sticker, but haven't heard any discussion about this since spring?

Brass Tap in Cincinnati had Blaecorn Unidragon on tap the other day. Menu said 12.5%. I think they are a little early on the rule though.

How much does that go for in retail?

I think I heard $11.99 in OH. WWS is OK. 120 is :slight_frown:

Yikes, why would they upcharge it? I don't think I've ever seen it higher than $9.99 anywhere and I've seen it on shelves in a number of neighboring states.

You know, I expected the worst from 120 given all the poor reviews. However I was pleasantly surprised how much I liked it. You can't expect a bright DIPA or anything like that, but for what it is, it was tasty and I can see myself picking 1 or 2 bottles up every year.

If you sit on 120 for a year or two it kind of turns into a really good barleywine. I prefer it aged over fresh.

I had one fresh and another that's nearly a year old now. Plan to crack into it when the weather gets a little cooler. A buddy has 3 and 4 year old bottles for me as well I think. Be interesting to taste and compare.

I guess that depends on your definition of a really good barleywine. I have yet to find an age where it doesn't taste overly boozy and dull. But that's just my opinion, YMMV.
