hey all. flying out to detroit next tuesday for a week for a wedding. staying in sylvania, oh. gonna hopefully take off and explore a day or two in the midst. any good recommendations for breweries/restaurants/bottle shops? gonna hopefully hit det or cleveland for a day, both if possible. looking for mostly non distro stuff. I'm in a great area but I'm sure there's some stuff I can't pass on. I unfortunately can't make the jackie o's release. too far and on the wedding stuff days. do any of their barrel aged or decent bombers hit oh distro too? cheers.
If you make it to Detroit, highly recommend Kuhnhenn and Griffin Claw. Also good stops would be Royal Oak Brewery, Bastone, and Rochester Mills. If you have more time, many many great breweries to check out in MI - Jolly Pumpkin, Dark Horse, Bells, Founders, Brewery Vivant........
If you didn't already see it, here's a ling to probably everything that you need to know about the Detroit area hot spots: Business Trip to Detroit
thanks man. kuhnhenn def on the radar. and griffin claw looks very intriguing, good looks. lots of heavy options - just my style haha. cool looking bottles. hopefully I can get lucky and they have a few. we get most of the rest of the other places you named - but anything rare I'll def smuggle home. I had another wedding in cali - got kinda carried away. lol. gotta be pickier this trip. don't see myself holding too great to that if griffin has stuff. way cheaper than by me.
If you have an opportunity to venture to the West Side of the state, I'm a huge fan of Oddside Ales in Grand Haven. I'm still waiting for their offer to be their Hype Man haha, because they make some killer off the wall stuff. They also have one of the most diverse / revolving taplists you'll see in a brewpub (at least the breweries I've been to). If I honestly had to rank the breweries in Michigan, I'd put them right at the top (or damn close)... Others may flame me for saying this, but it's just my personal take on it. I love the fact that they aren't afraid to take chances (and more often than not they turn out pretty damn good).
doubt I'll make it there - but looks cool. hipster brunch sounds awesome. at least it's not on now to add insult to injury haha.
Yeah you'll be a few months early for Hipster Brunch as it releases on Black Friday. They do, however, almost ALWAYS have something barrel aged on draft. And they'll put just about anything into a barrel from a Double IPA (Nihilist) to Stouts (BB Mayan Mocha, Hipster Brunch, etc.) I haven't been able to check out the revamped location, but I was amazed at the vibe in this place. Hands down some of the most laid back, friendly folks here I've ever seen in one location. Maybe I've just been lucky, but I'm guessing this is the norm here.
thanks for the info so far guys. looking forward to it. anything else? restaurants / bars / good bottle shops? do any of the ba jackie o's get distro or super rare / gone immediately?
Jackie o's barrel aged stuff get distro but gone quite fast. I'm in Indy and I make the drive into Cincy when it hits shelves at Jungle Jims but it's gone in the two hours it takes to get there! They have less popular stuff that sits like would ha honey and brick kiln. Oil or Aphrodite/dark apparition/oro negro gone very quick
While in Sylvania, hit The Andersons for Brew Kettle, Fatheads, Jackie O's and Maumee Bay Brewing. Also check out Black Cloister and Maumee Bay Brewing in Toledo, you won't be disappointed. If you head to Detroit Kuhnen(sp?), Dragonmead, Griffin Claw, Brew Detroit and Batch Brewing are worth checking out.
Definitely hit up The Andersons if you're staying in Sylvania. Marino's is another bottle shop to check out, but be sure to keep an eye on the dates. You'll be surprised what you may find in there. Burger Bar 419 and Shorty's BBQ both have great food and a pretty decent selection of beers. (They're also located in between the two shops listed above). Feel free to BM me if you want any additional information. Cheers.
I've seen it sell out in a day, and I've also seen it sit for a week +. I think the main reason it sits is due to it's high price.
Thanks! I appreciate that. I was just curious, because I made a trip to Ohio last week and got some. I knew it wasn't extremely rare, but just wondered "what I had."
Yeah there are bottles all over Cleveland. Been on shelves for a while. One of the few BA Jackie O's that sits for a while.
thanks for all the suggestions guys. did fat heads and great lakes day after I got here. took the shuttle from gl to the indians game. dinner at momocho, which was awesome. kuhnhenns, witches hat, and griffin claw last night. gc was dope. good service. kuhnhenn had some cool stuff - got a bottle of mead to go and tried 7% pink lemonade lol. that's a 1st. not much on for stouts or barrel aged stuff. sadness. questionable service tho. wish witches hat had cheaper glasses. they looked awesome but I wasn't about to drop over a hundo on them. solid trip so far. got some jackie o's too through a trade and might hit marinos quick later. maybe ann arbor. cheers.
