I'll give most people and most breweries multiple chances to redeem themselves. Not everyone can find their way clear to do that. There is an unnamed person and an unnamed local brewery where said person vehemently badmouths, insults, etc said brewery whenever the name is so much as mentioned on facebook or forums, and they seemingly go looking for opportunities. This has gotten to the point where some will taunt said person, while others completely ignore their posts like they don't exist. Tempted to ask them how the brewery wronged them.

It depends. If we're talking 'meh' but drinkable beer at a decent price I'm less likely to write a brewery off than I am if I'm handed a fundamentally flawed beer at high prices. Also, if we're talking about a location then things like service, food, or even my compatriots preferences start to play into if I'm willing to go back. All that said, I don't have any hard and fast rules, I play it by ear.

In the last 2 years I've had a number of breweries (Twin Elephant, Magnify & Conclave, Wet Ticket) close by open with good beers on day one. So now I expect breweries to be good when they open and don't go back until a 3rd party has proven to me that they are better.

No real number. If I see something I might like, I'll try it again. After a few times, if I'm still not digging it and it's pricey, I'll stop trying. But every once in a while they may surprise you.

Yeah, lots of mentions of Rogue in the other thread and all I can think is "have you not heard of Shakespeare Stout? "

I estimate that I will try three of the usual styles and if they can't make a decent beer from those then I stop. I might give them another shot in a year or try some special release beer on a whim. Special release beers often times get crazy and you never know if somebody is going to stumble on something worthwhile

It's more about amount of time, rather than amount of tries for me. A brewery opened in my town a few years ago, and their early batches were the worst beers I've ever had. Worst ever. But, I'd swing by every so often and see improvements. Now, they make wide variety of styles, and all are really good. Giving up on a brewery because you didn't like the first things you tried from them seems damn short sighted to me.

I totally agree here, especially if it's an established brewery.

I find it tough to be pissed off about beer. There's one local place that I've gone to a few times. I like the family, the place, but my first beer there one Friday afternoon was less than stellar and the service nonchalant. It was a double IPA, flaccid and acrid, but otherwise past its prime, if it ever had one. On the next two visits I had a Belgian style and a porter that were very good. Their attention and preferences seem to be more traditional styles, and I plan to stick with those on any future visits. Hopefully most breweries have their strengths. General quality around here is very good. Even without ordering one's first beer, a well run place is immediately noticeable. As for beer, I cannot remember an unpleasant second beer at any place.

The brewery that comes to mind is Great Lakes.
    I tried:

    Dortmunder gold
    Eliot Ness
    Commodore Perry
    Burning River
    Edmund Fitzgerald

They were ok but none really impressed me.
Then my friend who works at my beer store
recommended that I try Chillwave. It just
blew me away. So then I found a bunch more
that were also great. They were:

    Chillwave
    Nosferatu
    Lake Erie Monster
    Blackout Stout

I've given Dark Horse 5 chances from their best lineups and burned each time. I really want to like their beer but it's a disappointment every time. So the answer for me I guess is 5:

    Plead the 5th
    Bourbon Barrel Plead The 5th
    Crooked Tree
    Barrel aged Toonilla
And I have an unopened bottle of Scotty Karate I will have in the fall that I so am not looking forward to.

Well, I am much more lenient towards local breweries vs bottles of beer from non-local breweries. If I get a couple bad beers from buying a places stuff at a package store, I probably wont bother with them again. There are too many beers available to waste my time on things that I dont expect to enjoy.

With places that I can physically visit though, its a much different experience. They would have to consistently have bad beers, or have bad customer service to make me not want to go again.

2-3 tries unless the first beer I tasted from the new brewery is really bad, which I've experienced a few times. Some beers sounds so awful I won't even give them a try.

I completely agree with this. I'll try a handful of beers that any brewery should be crushing stylistically and if they're not good, I'm done. That's for well made beer that just isn't exciting.

If your brewery is making beer poorly or you have infection/QC issues, I'm not only done, but I'm doing to go out of my way to tell others about that poor quality.

As many in this thread have said, "There's WAY too much great beer out there to waste my time on bad stuff."

    Really depends.

Usually I approach a very new brewery with letting them get their feet wet first. I treat it often like a new restaurant meaning I wont go visit for at least 2 months after they have opened so they can iron out kinks.

There's too much good beer out there, so if I find 1, 2 brews from a new place in real bad form that's it.

Other times I have gone back, 3 or 4 new beers if I find one that is decent can sometimes keep it on the radar but I tend to make a decision pretty easily judging on a few beers quality.

I also tend to look for basic styles that they should be able to land. A pale ale is always a good tester, if they screw that up it's usually a forboding sign...

I'd say it depends on the reputation of the brewery in question, if there is no buzz about them, they may get three different beers out of me if I'm being generous. If it is a brewery a lot of people think highly of, maybe a few more depending on what is available to me in their range of beers. But honestly, it also depends on how off-putting my initial experience with them is, if it is wretched, then that's probably going to be it unless I can tell it's the byproduct off flavors.

I tend to go and visit nearly any brewery within an hour or so drive of my house at least once and do a flight to get a feel for their offerings. I do the flight approach because almost always shortly after a brewer opens or new beers are added you won't find any or very few ratings here on BA and I don't trust Untappd reviews to base my beer choice on. If nothing from their flight is interesting/or above avg. and after a few months of ratings to review at home on computer or phone, nothing jumps out as very highly rated, I'm not going back again most likely.

However the couple breweries close to my house I may revisit from time to time even if their beers have rarely/never interested me because of other factors besides the beer (vibe of the place, cool owner/tap pourers to chat with, convenience, food etc.).
