My son Was 16 and made a national soccer team and they went to Germany to play the regional ODP (Olympic development teams). They were Based in a training facility on the south side of Munich. I read the German training manual and they specifically stated the need to restrict drinking alcohol the days prior to a match!

His team was playing the southern Bavarian team in Oberammergau and were put up in a nice hotel. I went to watch and was allowed to meet him for dinner in the hotel restaurant, was there with a former teammate who lived in Munich and he recommended what dishes to have and ordered beers. I don’t remember what beer he ordered but it was very good. i asked my son if he would like a sip. He said “sure.” Remember that face you make when you taste your first beer? It’s bitter, you’re face scrunches up? Well, he didnt make that face....

Damn, I don't know what I'd do with total freedom and women everywhere again. I'm afraid that the intervening 39 years of marriage has left me a touch rusty in that particular arena.

I've seen some really young looking kids drinking at the Hofbrauhaus before. They were situated with their family, but they both had helles liters and I'd put 'em at around 12. They were either Americans or Canadians, too. I'd have been wrecked if that was me at that age, but they seemed to be doing fine.

Full liters each? Or were they sharing? :astonished:

The 2 kids I saw had .25l Krugs that Oma was filling from her Mass -- albeit, I didn't pay enough attention to how many refills they got.

Each had a full liter. I was thinking they might be radlers, but they didn't have that extra fizzy look to 'em. That was my first experience with the HB's "liters only after 7PM" rule, too. A couple of tourists from the UK beside them were getting into it with the waitstaff over that policy. So there's a chance the kids had to get liters. Still, like you mention, you'd think they'd share one.
They left before my wife and I did and they seemed to be doing fine.

If I were to guess, I'd say the dad ordered them the Maß each because he planned to help finish them!

BTW -- I never knew HB had that after 7:00 rule -- guess it never effected me.

I'd never heard of it until that trip (2014, I think) myself. Might be a new'ish thing? I don't know if I've ever even ordered 1/2L of lager there before, either.

I've seen it get enforced at least twice since, although I also saw a waiter make an exception. There was a woman who wanted 1/2L of hell. The waiter told her about the 7PM thing and to order a weissbier because it was smaller. She claimed they made her ill or something to that effect and he caved without much argument. In other instances, I've seen the staff tell people that it's their way or the highway. Kinda like Schneider up the street - they just weren't having it.
