I love an Oktoberfest beer. Love, I say, I love. Perhaps my favorite style and one I look forward to every year with great excitement and anticipation. Some of my favorites: Ayinger, Hof Brau, SN, Sam Adams, and a host of others. But let's be honest - not all Oktoberfest beers are built the same and some just don't do it for you. So which ones won't you be picking up this year? Which ones never quite cut it for you?

For me: Ballast Point's Dead Ringer. Just not a fan.

    Don't honestly know.

I don't keep track of beers I don't like and focus only on those I do. So until I see one on offer to decide whether to have it or not I forget all about the ones I don't like. Except that when I see it again then I remember having tried it.

Hmm, too bad, that means you're missing out on some really nice examples that are much fresher than the imported ones. (Unless you go to Germany every year for your O-fest beers the way a few lucky folks get to. :-))

To be fair, there are a few good ones, though.

Generally, I consider Samuel Adams to be the poster child for the American (mis)interpretation of the style . Anything similar to that one I want no part of.

I can think of a few I won't be buying again but that doesn't mean someone else won't like them. My beer journey is going forward, the ones I know I like are still there, new ones will crop up as well, so I don't really think about what's left behind.

Two Oktoberfest beers I will not be buying this year:
    • Sam Adams - I have never been a fan of that beer
    • Left Hand - that beer has been hit or miss over the past few years and frankly too many misses
    Cheers!

All of them. Not a fan. Although I think I've only had Great Lakes Brewing's version.

Sam Adams, way too sweet and caramelly. Horrid stuff.

I've never tried Left Hand's. Need to give that one a whirl.

Um... yeah. To paraphrase a long-passed, well renowned comedian:
    :grinning:
To answer the OP -- Leinenkugel's version is low on my list. I need to keep reminding myself that, no matter how inviting the 12 pack graphics look, I'm disappointed each and every time I try it.

I believe Fort Collins makes one as well. Tried it last year and was not digging it. Will not be buying.

I get there are decent ones, and I've had a few, but I've yet to find one that I liked better than the Hacker Pschorr Oktoberfest. It's just my fave.

Sierra Nevada makes a good Oktoberfest, but then again, taste is really subjective.

Read the OP again -- which Oktoberfest aren't you looking forward to?

+1 to Left Hand. I will not be buying it this year. I'm sure SN will knock it out of the park again and I'll just stick to that.

I like the Americanized caramel malt bombs. I would fit Paulaner in this category, so they must be doing something wrong. I usually buy a 5L keg of Hofbrau each season and regret it.

You're either getting very old Paulaner, or you're mistaking melanoidin malt character for caramel. They're different (and a well-made, to-style Amber Märzen {like Paulaner} will have no caramel character) and if you taste Sam Adams and Paulaner side-by-side you can really tell the difference.
BTW -- if you don't like the HB Festbier, stay away from Paulaner's Wies'n -- it's different from the Amber Märzen and very close to the HB.

I think I would have have to agree with this, I don't buy much Sam Adams O'fest any more though I do still pick up Left Hand hoping it will be as good as years past.

That's the one I was looking for in my mind, I think it's absolutely rock bottom on my list!
