Anyone have an idea what's going on at the Harviestoun website?

One can find OD 18 on the order page but there's no description of it on the OD subsite, OD 30 is described on the subsite.

No description of Oldest Engine Oil either, at least I wasn't able to find it.

    Thanks, KP.

Pretty much all you're gonna find these days is the 12, 16 or the 18 regardless of what the website might say right now.. Until recently the 40 made some fleeting appearances around Scotland but I haven't seen it in a while (9-12 months) though I know of at least one place where in can be had online. Sadly I'm pretty certain they don't ship overseas. As for the 30, well, better get that time machine for the moment.

No direct knowledge here, but small businesses often have trouble keeping their websites up to date because they often have to hire outside talent to do the web site in the first place. Then the fancy stuff doesn't get maintained because the talent moves on to other things. The only Ola Dubh beers that I've ever seen on the Advert part of the web site are those there now, the 12, 16 and 30. Didn't know there was an 18 and a 40 until I saw them reviewed here on BA.

I was able to find 30 locally (Mass) just a few weeks ago. In order to celebrate, I had to do a tasting of the 12, 16 & 30 ....

Never seen the 18 on the shelves around me at least.

Thanks BAs, just wanted to get the story straight on what they sell.

Picked up an OD 18 and 2 Oldest Engine Oils this weekend, never had any of the Harviestoun beers before so I'm looking forward to the meet & greet. Can't believe the B&T and Sche (sorry about the spelling) cost more than the Oldest Engine Oil though.

What was the verdict? I liked the 12 when I had it on draft, curious how the others compare.

If you happen to live near the Ontario border the Ola Dubh line has been a feature at the LCBO stores the last 2 Decembers. 12, 16, 18 , 30 and 40..were available. In fact 1 store for some reason had a lot of 40's in stock so they were selling them off for about $10 a bottle, too good to pass up.

If you are interested and nearby there is some stock in some stores of the 12:

Good to know they're both available over there in the States. Might be an idea to beermail knightlypint and give him a few pointers as to how he might acquire them through your sources. That would be nice.

I liked the 16 the most. In my opinion, the oak really came through in the nose & taste making it far more complex than the 12 and the 30. The 30 was the king of scotch that's for sure. It really takes a front seat in the action (not that it is a bad thing).

So I had my first Old Engine Oil last night. OK, my first 2.... I was impressed, it really is a solid beer. I assume it is the base beer for the Ola Dubh series, no? Similar to Founders FBS & the KBS/CBS right? Anyone?

Good god, that's a good 66% off what I always see them for here in Florida. I'd have bought so many.

Found the 40 at Plum Market in Ann Arbor, Mi when I went to pick up Cinco Anos a few weeks ago, and purchased a 30 from Canton, Mi about a month ago. Sadly it was the last bottle on both occasions, the other vintages sit on the shelf at most places

Can't answer your question but FBS isn't the base for KBS/CBS...they brew a different beer to put in the barrels for those. BORIS and BA BORIS or OH Imp. Stout and Event Horizon would be better examples..

Ola Dubh (Black Oil) uses a a beer which is based on Old Engine Oil.

Just had my first Ola Dubh (12 year) yesterday. I think I've found my barrel aged beer; I'm loving the Scotch character. Label says it was bottled July 2009, would the Scotch presence improve over time or decrease?

I tried my bottle of OD 18 last night.

I think zimbo's right, I think the ODs are based on OEO which is a 6% porter.

The presence of the scotch is low key so if you want the whiskey to dominate OD probably is going to disappoint you.

I don't like the whiskey dominating and am not a scotch/liquor drinker but I found the scotch a nice addition on top of what seems to be a good porter...can't wait to try the Engineer's Reserve, basically OEO but at 9% ABV.

I've seen several posts recently which indicated disappointment about various whiskey-barrel-aged beers due to the dominating whiskey presence, if you're in that group I'd say give OD a shot. BTW, OD 18 is $12/11.2oz so...

    Enjoy, KP.
