North Coast Old Stock Ale is a necessary to pick up if your diving into the style.

Also, wait a few months and definetly pick up some Great Divide Hibernation in the mid Fall-Winter time period. Its a lower ranging old ale but its readily available and a good price point.

Not sure how readily available AleSmith Old Ale is but i have a few bottles laying around in my local brew shop. Its a higher price point but supposed to be real good. Never tried it.

Ugh. I hate it when people say this. It's an amazing beer, no doubt. One of the biggest beer related benefits to living in pdx is having regular access to this beer for a reasonable price. However, it is aTERRIBLE example of the style. It is nothing like an old ale and nothing like Old Curmudgeon. It's only listed as an old ale because there really isn't any style on this site that it fits into. Again, i totally agree that it's an excellent beer and totally worth seeking out, just don't expect an old ale.

One word: Pannepot. I know it's classified as a quad here but the bottle says "old fisherman's ale" and i find it to be more like an old ale than a quad. Not as sweet as a quad and not as much Belgian yeast flavor. IMO.

first. i'm no expert on the subject. that out the way, objectively can a question be asked here? is it possible that the quoted statement was made because no other producer has succeeded in making an "old ale" that compares directly to Adam? or. are we sure Adam isn't truly an old ale more so than the possibility other producers are calling their product "old ale"; & because others share more common profile nuances we've been forced to conclude their product is more in the so called "style" based on familiarity - even if said familiarity is not actual truth?

style aside. one common definition of "old ale" seems to be that the product has been aged post production & pre-release. i.e. the brewer has kept the beer post production to age on premise; meaning by the time it comes to market, it's "old" compared to beers that demand fresh release. applying that definition, it's not really a style but rather a PRACTICE. no?

Came on to post this. Very nice with hoppy, caramel, molasses and vanilla notes. A Winter seasonal so you will have to wait a few months

I know, that beer is balanced in all malt and hop characters. Why that brew isn't labeled World Class is beyond me.

I have one more Bell's Third Coast from a 6 pack I bought in 2008. I've had one per year. They keep getting better.

I've never had any exactly like Old Curmudgeon either. It is pretty pale, which seems to bring out more of the vanilla barrel notes. As a huge fan of strongs/barleywines/old ales/wee heavies, here are some of my maltier favorites-

    Founders Dirty Bastard
Bell's Third Coast Old Ale (Fall and Spring)
    North Coast Old Stock
    Lagunitas Hairy Eyeball (Winter)
Great Divide Old Ruffian and Claymore

    Cheers

True and if you read the history of the beer you'll find Alan has discussed its origin extensively.

    OP:

if you like Curmudgeon you'll probably enjoy the far more complex malty boosy and woody Anniveerary beers series from The Bruery. There are about 20 of them now see for example:

I have had two Old Ales, Eel River Triple Exultation which really impressed me and Great Divide Hibernation Ale which I tried after Triple Exultation and I did not like as much. I have a two year old bottle of Old Stock Ale it should be really good once I get to it.

I recently snagged a sixer of last year's batch for $9.99. I fell in love with it but I'm going to try and forget about the other five bottles and pull them out this winter.

Greene King Olde Suffolk and Theakston Olde Peculiar. They fly under the radar but are damn fine old ales.

There was a strong cherry finish to Old Curmudgeon I personally did not care for same reason so don't drink cherry sodas! Any thoughts?

If you can find it. Really Old Brown Dog by Smurtynose. Great bang for your buck for an Old ale.
