I've decided to get some cans of Torpedo and figured they wouldn't very old but the canning date is 2090708:49. I figured it to be around March which is very old for an IPA! I don't know if cans preserve hops better than bottles but every time I buy bottles its within at least 3 months of bottling. Maybe it's just my location, but I think I will stick to bottles from now on.

Look at the dates before buying.

FWIW, I had some 5 month old canned Torpedo awhile back. While not as good as the fresh stuff, it was pretty solid.

Since you have already bought it, buy another 6 pack of cans and compare. If the old stuff doesn't compare, cook with it. From other posts here, cans may very well preserve IPAs better since they are sealed tighter and no light can get in. Either way, if you do a side-by-side test with fresh Torpedo and post your results, you will be doing other BAs a public service.

Serious question, and maybe for a different forum, but what kind of recipes work well with super hoppy IPAs? I've only ever cooked with Lagers, Stouts, Ambers, Browns, BWs, and Belgian non-sour ales. Maybe for a different forum, but I'd honestly like to know how the hops cook into the food, and if it ends up making it more bitter, or otherwise.

Serious question, yes. Different forum, maybe. Different person to ask, definitely. I don't have a clue. But if the hops have faded, any effect from the hops may be lessened.

How do you read that code?

First digit is the year, next three digits are the day of the year

The first four digits are all that matters. 2 for 2012, and then 090 as a Julian date code (the 90th day of that year).

    edit: Beaten by a second.

I actually did this the other day--found it had lost a lot. I think there is a standard date on the top of the cardboard, and mine looked to be from April.

As for that--I cooked 2lbs chicken breasts with ~10oz Torpedo and a thicker bbq sauce the other day in a crockpot for like 8 hrs on low, along with some spices. It was great. Torpedo makes for a good cooking beer.

Hoppy IPA's are an excellent braising liquid for a pork roast. Throw it in a slow cooker with a little rosemary, onion, garlic, chicken stock and of course the Torpedo. Low and slow.

Sounds delicious, but the wife keeps kosher, so pork is out unfortunately. Maybe save that one for a weekend she spends at her moms....

We have a canned date of day 41 of 2012 in town. I think it's held up remarkably well compared to when I had 'em fresh, or fresher at least.

Well I was going to buy some more Torpedo and compare, but I found some bombers of New Belgium Super IPA. So that is what is on the menu tonight.

Around Boston we got some nice fresh cans when they first started the format, but recently they 've been lagging. Seen packs dated March & April the past few weeks - no thanks. Grabbed a March 4 pack by mistake in early August and it was bad.

On the flip side we got ~ 3 week old botlles in 12 packs a few weeks ago that were terrific.

Moral of the story: cans still don't solve the stale beer epidemic in the craft beer biz.

Brats simmered in IPA are fine not that I notice the hops.

I have found that several chinese dishes work well with IPAs. Usually the spicier styles of chinese.

I agree Spicy Thai dishes such as Curries and Spicy Noodles work great, Pad Thai as well.

It should be fine, cans should hold up longer due to less UV exposure.
