Old Chub 6.9% or 8%?

Did Oskar Blues lower the abv in Old Chub? It's always been 8%, the BA review page says 8%, the Oskar Blues website says 8%, but my can says 6.9%. Is this just a mistake on the label maybe? I bought a can about a month ago and I'm pretty sure it said 8%. It seems to taste the same, but I'm drinking a nitro can which I haven't had nearly as much as the original, so I don't know if I'd pick up on a difference as easily. It's delicious, but I'd hate to think they changed the recipe based on principle alone. If it is an error in labeling will the can be worth more than the 5 cent refund as errors in baseball cards make the value skyrocket? (only half joking).

Please, someone tell me it's just an error.

@Hoggo not an error, a change of recipe for the nitro cans. Some bars had issues serving 16oz x 8%. How many pints of 8% are served these days? From the bars I have been going to, 11-12oz max, and less at some. Cheers!

    edit, spelling

I don't drink beer for the abv % but this is very disappointing if true. Old Chub is an amazing scotch ale as is.

I hope this is a temporary change.

They only changed it for the Nitro version. If a beer losing 1.1% ABV is a big deal for someone, they might have a bigger issue to worry about. The new version tastes exactly the same anyways.

Ok, that makes sense I guess. I still don't like it though. Not that I need 8% abv per se, but I just don't like any change in recipe for a well-established awesome beer. Although I guess you can argue that the nitro is a change in the recipe. Still, as was mentioned above, there's gonna be a bunch of 8, 9, 10% DIPAs at the same bars that don't like serving the 8% Old Chub. Oh well, I guess if the original is still the same I shouldn't bitch about it...

I've had several 4 packs and they were all 8%. Tasty stuff, hope they didn't change it.

A 1% change in alcohol means a change in ingredients, which means a change in flavor, as minor as that change may be. There's not as much sugar in there for some reason. If my favorite beer changed recipes I'd be slightly worried about the outcome as well and not because I'm an alcoholic and need more booze but because it is now different.

@joe1510 from a brewing perspective, likely the same ingredients, just a little less of them all. Same yeast, mash temps, proportionate ibus and terminal gravity would yield very similar beer.

That's my point. Less of the same thing isn't the same thing.

    from the article:

"after years of experimenting with putting fresh draft beers on nitro, Oskar Blues Brewery decided to take the next step and insert the robustly complex OLD CHUB into a Nitro' d CAN. Both internal and taproom trials were part of the new formulation process, and the 6.9% version measured up in taste to the 8% version while many liked the ability to have more than one"

@Hoggo what is your can date?

So the Nitro cans were originally 8% but newer batches are now 6.9%? I don't really care about the change in abv, but I could've sworn the the 4 pack I picked up in July said 8%. They have not been 6.9% since the nitro cans were originally released, right?

@Hoggo that makes senseof it, you have the freshest batch of it. It's not some sort of false information. @DrStiffington correct, originally 8.0, now 6.9
