Anyone had this beer, what are your thoughts?

Really interested in opinions outside of NC, if anyone has been able to try it

I tried it yesterday because someone told me it was better than Backwoods Bastard. Now I knew that could not be true, and it wasnt. But damn it was close! Same barrel flavors as Event Horizon, and a bit more earthy and leafy than Backwoods.

Definitely agree with that statement. Has a very similar nose as well.

I am definitely interested in trying this out. Perhaps I will do a side by side with Backwoods.

    Better yet...

Do side by side by side with Backwoods and Event

I saw they used the same type of barrels (Maker's Mark and Jim Beam) which explains the similarities.

I had a bottle of it last week. I thought it was very good. The nose is a little more subtle than EH and LP (barrel wise), and the beer is a tad thin but overall it is very good. I don't think it is in the same league as Backwoods Bastard, but I do think it is one of the better scotch ales out there. And $7/bomber or less, and easy to find, can't be beat.

Still have a few bottles myself. Had em for a week now. Haven't had a chance to crack one open yet. Not really all that excited about it. Already think saying it's better than Backwoods is absurd. Sorry.

To me, they have 2 completely different tastes.

    Both are great beers.

So given that this is described as a Scottish-Style Ale, as opposed to a Scotch/Wee-Heavy, is it really fair to match this up against Backwoods Bastard? If the 8.0% ABV includes the contribution from the barrel (can anyone confirm?), wouldn't this mean the base beer is in the 6.0% range. Can anyone shed some light on this?

I imagine the production was similar, but the demand/hype is way less for SD.

The first thing I thought when I tasted seven devils was backwoods..but I think they have big differences, too.

Can't wait to try this. Got a couple bottles coming my way from Hickory next weekend. The Brown Ale in Bourbon Barrels sounds really good too.

Yeah, I wouldn't compare them really. It's a different style of beer and I don't believe the brewer was looking to make some crazy Scotch Barleywine type of thing.
I think many folks are missing the point with this beer. It isn't supposed to be a thick, monster of a wee hev. It isn't supposed to Bastard or Old Chub. It's a scottish style heavy/export and the viscosity is spot on for the style. It ain't always about how thick we can make a beer.
Side note- barrel aging a beer won't add 2% to the alcohol content unless there is an ungodly amount of booze left in the barrel.

    It's a slightly different style.
I personally feel it's better than Backwoods.
It's absurd to speculate wildly about beer you have yet to taste.
