What would it take it land an 07-09 Darkness? Would a combo of BT and CR even get close? Talking about one bottle of each so three total.

    07 no.

    08 and 09 maybe.

07 is needing some major ammo

As in a combo of the two might land 08 and 09 or the combo might land of them?

A combo might land the '09. Highly doubt anyone would part with an '08 for a CR and BT. As already stated, an '07 is out of the question with that ammo.

yeah, '07 is a bona-fide whale. think brandy vanilla DL level. maybe not quite there, but in that stratosphere.

Please help me understand why an 07 darkness is so sought after. It isn't even barrel aged is it? Other than hype is it really that good? My comment is not to be thread crapping it's just that I've never had it so I truly don't know.

not barrel aged. i don't think anyone really thinks it's that good anymore. it's that the bottle count was a fraction of the subsequent years, most of said bottles have been drank already, and people want to complete their verticals.

believe it or not, '06 darkness exists, but no one tries to trade for it because it was only available in growlers (very few of them at that) and for all intents and purposes, it's a ghost. kind of like the '05 BA dark lord growler that popped up when dave got released a month or two ago.

edit: this thread talks about it a bit http://beeradvocate.com/community/threads/2006-surly-darkness-growler.104914/

We drank the 07-12 vertical a little while back. The 07 was by far voted the worst tasting of all of them. The 08 voted the best. I would go after the 08 and be okay with not ticking the 07.

07 Darkness is .rar walez brah status for easy reasons. You're not going to get older unless you find a growler of the 06 floating around or the secret rumors of them holding on to a few kegs of it finally appear.

Besides, it was before the mass appeal of hunting down trucks for craft beer popped up and it had a bottle count in the high 400's. My bottle is #438. I think only 480 were released. So, I mean, it's pretty much up there with BAVDL in terms of bottle count. Add in age and scarcity of after 6 years worth of time for the number of bottles to dwindle down and you can see why it's sought after. Especially for those vertical seekers.

07 is probably a pipe dream for most to trade for. But what about 08? How rare or how much would you have to give up to get one? I would love to add that to my vertical having 09-12 with 13 on the way.

'08 is doable, there were a lot more bottles of it brewed, though the number escapes me. It would take some good ammo to bring one out, but I'm sure they're available.

IMHO, the '08 was never & will never be better than the '07. The '08 was more a neutron sweet bomb (think Dark Lord), & it's never budged off that mark; the '07, even a year ago (the last time I had it, sadly) was still a hoppy, dry, roasy stout. I'm still amazed at how well the hops held on in the '07.

08 Darkness saw a production of around 5,000 bottles. So yeah, it still can be tracked down.

There was recently a trade for '07 Darkness, the poster was looking for "Rare Sours"...

You mean the one with a broken wax seal? I don't know anyone who would actually trade for that. Would you trade for a Spuyten Duvil that's missing a cork with a non-Cantillon cap on it?

We did the same on new years and i agree 100%. 08 is so damn good right now. 07 is a shell of its former self
