A thread in bar talk with this link got me wondering. It lists Nuemann's Bar in North St. Paul as the oldest continuous running bar in MN opening in 1887. This cannot possibly be right is it? I was thinking it could possibly be The Hubbel House in Mantorville which opened in 1854-57ish range. I believe there was always a saloon there except during prohibition but the establishment never closed.
Neumann's is a fun place, full of character and a lively biker crowd. But I've always wondered* whether their claim held up to scrutiny. There are a few other bars in the east metro (St. Paul) that like to stake their claim to the title of oldest in the state, too, and all seem to benefit from their popularly-held title -- The Spot Bar is among them. *I've never looked too far into any of it, but the popularly-held "historic" aspect adds a lot to the appeal.
Hamms on tap as well! Always my selection there. Definitely that is the claim that they are the oldest but I have no idea if that is fact.
