This is expensive for a beer but still not a sam adams utopius. I wonder how much it cost them to produce it. I bet since they are small batches they would have to spread the cost out against a smaller number of bottles. maybe that's why they are more than double the cost of the non-barrel aged version.

Cash money! If they can sell 500-600 bottles almost every week in a day or two at 30-35 bucks they might as well.

As the wine-folk say..."if you have to ask the price, you probably can't afford it". Honestly, everyone needs to stop bitching about prices. You can't afford it or think it's not worth the price, don't buy it! Simple as that. There will always be people who are still willing to buy it, so you complaining about it doesn't help. Hoarders Society...send me an invite already! :sunglasses:

i don't understand how people are so blown away by a brewery charging $30+ for a bottle of beer. plus they only release like 4-500 of these things - it's such a small amount of beer that the majority of people (and even BAs) won't be remotely impacted.

now if they raised the price of zombie dust to $100 a case, then people would have something to go crazy over.

Let's say a barrel costs $300 (being generous cause I'm a great guy). Moloko is $8 from the brewpub, and this (these) base beer(s) have aged for a year in a rack so space is a concern but not too enormous of one. They don't have a huge barrel program but I'd say they have at least 50 barrels now. If they put out a 500 bottle batch the $300 barrel brings sixty cents to each bottle, so we're at $8.60. The fact that the bottles likely cost them ~$2 and they label them by hand and wax dip them likely adds to the price. There's labor involved but not over $20 per bottle. For the record I do understand the concept of capitalism and market pricing -- I just don't always need to impress the Joneses, or myself...

Three Floyd's knows they have the demand and they're pricing according to market and the arguments in this thread shows it. I'll optimistically hold off on purchases and wait until they expand their barrel program and begin to blend multiple barrels. I think it's been pointed out that they have blended as many as two, but I'm a snotty beer geek and for $35 I'd like something I can be more easily expect to be delicious and well done.

I think there'd be more than one barrel for a batch that size. 750ml x 500 = 375l =99 gal. I have no idea what size cognac barrels are but would assume they had 2-3 for this.
And I wish a brewery around here would do just about anything remotely close to something like FFF, at least Id have the option to buy or not.

Regardless of price and rarity, people have high expectations for these special releases from Three Floyds and they seldom deliver. I've had the majority of them and only one stands out as something I'd drink again.

Of course not, everyone is waiting on everyone else to try it, so everyone can trade it if it sucks.

Their normal stuff is very hit-or-miss with me. APW, Blackheart, RTB, etc. I could do with out. Moloko is alright, Gumballhead isn't terrible, Zombie Dust is pretty great actually, etc...

The BA stuff seems to follow suit so far with my limited samplings. Cuvee Du Viking was drain-pourable, but BA Owde Engwish was AMAZING. I had the Plum Klaus, and it wasn't a drain pour, but it wasn't good either.

    I'm sure I've had others, but I don't know.

I look forward to opening this and Cabra in the next couple weeks and starting a thread about it.

    As for this thread:
    - Four Pages
    - ~150 posts

If this is correct, and it has been in my experience, why do folks keep buying them? My opinion is FFF isn't all they are cracked up to be, and I tend to stay away from most everything they put out, but apparently many people disagree with us. The free market at work...

Deesko was the enjoyable surprise for me. Battle Priest, Cabra, one of the BA chili stouts, and all the BA Klaus variations were very disappointing. I didn't consider grouping the Darklord variations in with those because of theyre typically their own special release/category.

Because they trade so well obviously and some people actually do enjoy the majority of their stuff. I absolutely love Zombie Dust and trying an ounce or two of super sweet -bal aged Darklord from time to time, but I just don't have the same appreciation for them others do.

"Long", as in too short in length; or "long" as in "It doesn't want to be on the bottle". Does anyone have a pic of the label? Thanks! Cheers!
