I made a thread about this in the old forum section, never got a response. Hopefully this does. I had this back in the summer, this did not taste fruity at all. It was like a very tarty, full bodied dry wine. I let it sit, open up, get warm.. Didn't change it. I note that the place I got it from had it stored cold, if that means anything. Isn't this beer supposed to be fruity??
I've only got one in the fridge & haven't tried it yet, but from this it kinda sounds like it, but maybe a very subtle fruitiness. Actually it sounds pretty damn good - of course it should, this is marketing copy. http://www.ommegang.com/index.php?mcat=1&scat=14&spclty=1 Aphrodite In Greek mythology, Aphrodite rises from the foam of the waves of the sea, enchanting all who see her, and inciting thoughts of love and lust where ever she goes. We could hardly say it more eloquently. Our Limited Edition Aphrodite Ale is ethereal, intriguing and mysterious – as the Goddess Aphrodite must have been. Aphrodite has champagne-like carbonation, much as the foam of the waves of the sea. Plus enchanting flavors with whispers of raspberry and pear, and hints of funk and tartness created by the Brett yeast. The refreshing dryness comes from the unusual combination of Ommegang and Brett yeasts, and incites feelings of love and thirst, though we don’t know about lust. Grains of paradise are infused into the nectar, and when poured Aphrodite is crowned with a luxuriously shimmering rose-pink head. Ommegang Aphrodite: Ommegang Limited Edition Ale Belgian-style fruit beer with Brett yeast Malts: Pils and carapils Hops: Celeia Fermentation: Ommegang house & Brett yeasts Spices: Grains of paradise Fruit: Natural raspberry & pear juices OG: 14.5 Plato FG: 2.8 Plato ABV: 8.9% IBU: 19 Available: July 2011 on draft and bottled in AK, AL, CA, CO, CT, DC, DE, FL, GA, IA, IL, IN, KY, MA, MD, ME, MI, MN, MO, NC, NH, NJ, NM, NY, OH, OR, PA, RI, SC, TN, TX, VA, VT, WA, WI.
Little-known fact: the foam from which Aphrodite sprang was caused by Ouranos's severed genitals being thrown into the sea by his son Kronos. So how 'bout that carbonation?
I had it on draft at the brewery before the beer was released in bottles and it was moderately tart and dry but there was definitely pronounced raspberry in the aroma and upfront in the flavor. I had a bottle shortly after it was released and that was definitely more tart than the draft version. Again, the raspberry was significant in the nose and was the first note when tasting the beer. I detected the raspberry at the forefront of the sip before the tartness becomes prominent through mid-palate and into the finish. I have another bottle cellaring and expect the tartness to increase and the raspberries to diminish some over time, so if you've had this beer recently maybe that is the direction this beer is headed since it is roughly 8 months old.
Had a bottle about a month ago. Still quite a bit of fruit, but I got more apple than raspberry. Tartness is average and was quite malty. Would prefer it to be sourer. I can see the wine-like qualities to it, but would consider much closer to cider than wine. It was interesting, but not something I would buy again.
I had it, back in September I believe. Wrote a review, if you're curious. I think it definitely was fruity, but not overbearingly so—raspberry flavor held its own but it was very dry, too. I enjoyed it quite a bit, actually, apparently unlike a lot of other people.
my lowest rated beer, of about 370~. ommegang hits the spot more often than not for me, and gnomegang was one of the standout beers of the last few years (2 rhyming clauses in a row), but aphrodite... irredeemable.
I found it to have a very nice scent and taste of multiple berries including raspberries, my review can be found here http://beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/42/71369/?ba=BigPlay1824
This thread inspired me to open my bottle of Aphrodite tonight. And I have to say, this is definitely a fruity beer. Very very raspberry. And in general I think I'm going to side with Pahn, I'm wincing with every sip. Just not my cup of tea. Definitely not the worst beer I've ever had but up there among the most unique.
